I had been giving my three cats a pouch a day to share of this stuff and they loved it. Recently the big guy started throwing up clear liquid just like he did eating the recalled brands (Iams, nutro, pounce etc). At the same time my tortie was laying on her side, hanging her head for a whole day totally out of normal. I stopped feeding the pouches immediately, because they were made in Thailand. I kept feeding my cats the Brandon Farms organics dry kibbles, as well as the homemade food that makes up about half their diet.
The cats recovered in a couple days, although the big cat, who was throwing up became constipated not using the litter box at all, which may or may not be related to the food, since he has an enlarged bladder due to urinary blockages, and can go downhill fast
Has any one else had trouble with these pouches? The vomit was not hairball, but just like the problem with the recalled cat foods. There hasn't been an episode since I stopped. In any case, watch out for this symptom if you use these pouches. I saw my cats almost die in the last recall, and this vomiting was so similar. Stupidly I did not save the packages they ate, although I have other packs left in my pantry.

Could you please give us the flavor and the ingredient list? Is there any gluten among the ingredients? Lots of canned catfood are made in Thailand... so, this will be of interest to many pet parents here.

Is there anyway you could please list information on the remaining pouches that you said you have left?
My friend wants to try this food for her cats and your post is making me very nervous for my friend's cats.

Sunday, JUNE 22 -- we fed our cat WHISKAS PURRFECTLY Chicken & Duck and Chicken entrees, made by MARS, made in Thailand. She ate three pouches. Like the cats that ate the Purrfectly Fish food, our kitty (10 yrs old) has been very sick, throwing up clear foamy liquid, won't eat or drink, it's been three days now of vomiting. Took her to vet yesterday, he took urine and blood samples, gave her fluids, we brought her home. We will get results from Vet tomorrow, Monday, and I will be on his doorstep if our kitty isn't better.
I have never had a problem with other cat foods, and I feed my cat only one brand, which I have not seen on recall lists, but I bought this Whiskas Purrfectly because of a coupon and it looked like it might be a treat for her.
To anyone who has seen their cats throwing up clear liquid after bad food, please tell me they came out of it?

Hi Jena,
I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. What does your vet think it is?
Is there an emergency vet in your area? If she is still vomitting, you don't want her to get dehydrated. If it was me, I would take her to the emergency vet rather than wait another 24 hours.

Jena, I hope also your kitty is okay. But don't mess around on this, as
the symptoms are what some kitties who became ill from pet food had, and
getting dehydrated can be dangerous for any cat. So if your kitty is continuing
to vomit clear fluids or fluids that are green in color, not going to the litter box, acting lethargic (not moving a lot), not eating, any of the above for more than 24 hours, please do contact your vet or go to emergency before the blood work is back just to be safe.
e wem, please give all the info you have on the products you used. Only a vet can really
tell you by testing if your kitties are okay, and I really hope they are!

oh no --- Jena, I hope yur kitties will be OK --- if it is only one pouch, chances are they will bounce back quickly. I looked at the ingredient list of the Purrfectly ... chicken and Duck:
Sufficient Water for Processing,
Chicken, Duck,
Liver,
Soy Oil (a known goitrogen)
Corn Starch-Modified,
Wheat Gluten (We know that the foods with wheat gluten in them were the ones recalled last eyar becuase of melamine and CA contamination)
Natural Flavors,
Guar Gum,
Sodium Tripolyphosphate,
Taurine,
Salt,
Iron Oxide (this is RUST!!!)
Caramel Coloring,
Vitamins (Vitamin A Acetate, dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate [Source of Vitamin E], Thiamine Mononitrate [Vitamin B1], Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [Vitamin B6], Riboflavin Supplement [Vitamin B2], Folic Acid), Disodium EDTA (I don't trust this ingredient)
Sodium Nitrite (for color retention),
Minerals (Manganese Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate),
BHA/BHT (a preservative that has been shown to be highly carcinogenic).
The ingredients I highlighted are the "usual suspects" when a cat (or dog) gets ill after eating a particular petfood.

 Thanks everyone, for writing. My kitty-girl pulled out after 5 days of being really sick. The Vet visit on day 4 probably saved her life. She was the worst on the morning of day 5 and we shed a lot of tears but she pulled out of it within hours. We brought her back around by mixing water with her normal wet food, heating it till warm, and she lapped it up like gravy. Just fed her a tablespoon at a time until we knew she was keeping it down. Got as much water into her this way as we could, since she wouldn't drink at her bowl. She's a little thinner after this, but she's back to normal and Vet said her creatinine numbers and all other numbers looked perfectly fine. We had a Vet tell us once to feed our cats simple Purina products to avoid ARF and kidney problems as they aged. We've fed our kitty Purina dry foods and Friskies for Seniors for about 6 years now and we were pleased to see her kidney function numbers all in healthy range, and this for a 10-yr-old cat. We're grateful. Thanks again for writing, I was panicked and heartbroken. -- Jena (and Trill)

I have only been feeding my Athena these pouches for a few days and she hasn't had any problems--liked it more than Fancy Feast, in fact--but just the other day she didn't eat a huge chunk of it. Come to find out there was a fish spine in there and a full set of ribs. I realize that cats are hunters and eat fish raw in the wild, but can small bones really be safe for our highly domesticated cats these days? I'm a fairly new cat owner, so I honestly don't know.
As far as the vomiting goes, I think you should call the company if you haven't already, even if you don't have the pouches. They still need to know that there's a problem.

Jream, Welcome to Itchmo - you will learn much about how to care for and feed your kitty well here. Just ask. We have many who do extensive research into the PFI (pet food industry) and what really goes into the food we feed our fur-babies.

Jream, welcome to the forum!
Some bones in canned fish are OK for cats to eat--the bones in salmon and sardines. They are quite soft after undergoing the canning process and are actually a good source of calcium. If the bone breaks up easily when you press on it with a fork, it probably would not cause a problem for most cats. Even my cat with missing teeth can handle these. I usually mash them a little, just to be sure.
A harder bone, however, could present a hazard. And even with the edible bones, you don't usually see a whole spine with ribs hooked on! How big was it?
If it was big and hard, I think you should notify the company.

Thanks for the welcome  Catbird, it was small enough to break apart, but the spine was about an inch long and had a full set of ribs embedded in the chunk of food with it. It looked like a fossil, actually--but it did all come apart pretty easily. So it sounds like my problem isn't that serious, thankfully. This vomiting issue that others are facing, however, is definitely a problem. I'd like to see what becomes of this. |
