After reading FEEDING YOUR CAT: KNOW THE BASICS OF FELINE NUTRITION, I'm buying wet cat food (and only good brands like Innova and Wellness). One of my cats is a light eater, and only eats about 1/8-1/4 of a can at a time. But when I put food out after it's been in the refrigerator, he won't touch it. The local pet food store owner recommended I heat it up slightly in the microwave. Which I tried. Oh gawd in heaven -- the smell. Any other ideas for how I can warm up the food once it's been refrigerated?

A winter solution for us - we sometimes put cans on a radiator to warm them up.

I don't do this with pet food, but this might work: I put food in zip loc bags and let it sit in hot water for a while.

Thanks! Anything but that smell again! (I'm stressed out that I'm still feeding them too much dry food, which is not good for them. Oh, it was so much easier though. Tomorrow, I'm going to try some raw food that the local pet store keeps in a freezer.)

We were at a local pet store recently and they said the holistic food and the raw stuff has been flying off the shelves. Good news....

Do you think your cat would eat it a little soupy? My cats have no problem with the temperature. I feed raw (Dr. Lisa's from catinfo.org recipe) and Wellness canned. If the raw is still a little frozen, I just add some warm water. I'm too lazy to let it sit in warm water, plus my cats would NEVER wait that long. So maybe if you add some warm water to the canned food, that'll be warm enough for him. Picky cats, have to have their food, mouse temperature. Heather

I was at my Local pet store and was told the same thing...The lady who runs the store asked if I thought people would continue to bye the holistic foods....My thoughts are some will.. but once this all dies down..People will go back to cheaper brands...Not because they want to...But because it's what folks can afford...What do you guys think?

My new 10-month-old was having trouble eating wet food as well. A friend recommended adding a little bit of water to it. Not only did that help him lick up the food more easily, but I also found it made refrigerated portions much more palatable! Try adding a small amount of warm water & mixing it in real well. It creates a much softer consistency. (You can also try to trick him by keeping an empty can on hand and pretending to open it, so he hears the sound & thinks it's a new can. )

Personally, I was feeding eukanuba because I thought spending a little more would be the best....yeah right! I have since switched to wellness and I can tell you after finding out it's easy to find a good food just by reading the ingredients (at least we hope) I will continue to spend the extra money. My dog...ate the tainted food and ever since I had the thought of losing her to something this stupid I will never put cost infront of good quality. My dog has a funny stomach, so this switch has been difficult. I find myself trying to convince all the cat and dog owners to switch...alot of people are not informed!

Not sure what size cans you are buying, but you might consider buying only the smallest sized cans if you aren't already. (3 oz)
We have five cats, and divide one 5.5 oz + one 3 oz can of Wellness five ways at each meal time (and there is still a little leftover). We used to use two 5.5 oz but there was a lot of waste and they aren't fond of refrigerated leftovers either. The 3 oz cans are handy and waste less food.

Yes my cat is one of the smart ones too...when he hears the 3 oz can being open he gets pretty excited, but then when I refrigerate the leftovers, and let it sit at room temp. for a few minutes, he still walks away...and yes, I kept an empty can with the lid and make a sound with it, but he still walks away...he only wants the new unopened cans..does anyone have any more ideas?

Thanks for all the tips, everybody! I like the warm water idea ... put the food in a plastic bag, then in warm water, or just put the can in some warm water.
Another thing: I've learned that the TYPE of wet food makes a difference. If it's Merricks' Ocean Medley ... hell, it could be frozen and I think they'd eat it. I'm going to get more fishy wet foods this weekend since that's what they seem to love the most.
They also LOVE AvoDerm's fishy wet food.
(Btw, the clerk suggested I try Prairie's rabbit. Uh. Even the homeless cats I feed outside wouldn't eat it. Not even the raccoons would eat it. So, if the kids want fish, they're gonna get fish!)

Regrigerated canned pet food.
First of all, make sure you store the can with a sealing snap on lid so it doesn't dry out. If you are heating the petfood untill you can't stand the smell it means you are over heating it. Good food shouldn't smell that bad. When I reheat a portion of regrigerated food it takes about 9 seconds to make it room temperature and I can hardly notice an increase in odor. Good luck!
