Hi everyone, I have been feeding my cat the Wellness complete health dry food for some time now and he's been doing great but when I opened this last bag it had a funny smell to it, usually it smells more like fish this smelled more mentally.  I've been running around to every pet store in my area and they all small the same.  I called my vet and she said they haven't heard anything about a recall but I'm still so worried.  My cat Paulie has so many allergies (chicken, corn, guar gum) so I can't just switch his food to something else.  If anyone has any advice for me please let me know, I am so worried. Thank you!

Hi mycatpaulie,

Welcome to Itchmo!

What is the best buy date from your bag of food?  You could look for bags with a different date if you haven't done so already.  Is that the Salmon recipe?

There is another brand geared toward cats with allergies. California Natural.  Herring & Sweet Potato Adult.

Thanks for the warm welcome and information.  It's so strange because I purchased four different bags with four different expiration dates (May,June,Nov,Dec) from four different stores and they all smelled the same, I even brought a different size bag to see if that was the problem.  I wish it wasn't the weekend so I could call the company.  Do you know how often pet food companies change there formulas and are the required to tell the buyers about it?  Thanks for the food suggestion, i will take a look at it, I'm just so nervous to switch him off this food because before this he was doing so good on it.  Thanks so much again for your help!

Sorry I forgot to say yes it's the Salmon based one in the red bag.  Also do you know if there is anywhere I could get the food tested, or will the company do that when I call them on Monday.  I found this site but I'm not sure if they test pet food...

Did Paulie eat any of this food?  I know their kitten dry food last year had a different smell to one batch I bought and the next batch didn't have that smell. We didn't have any problem with that batch though.  I'm currently feeding an October, 2011, bag of Wellness Kitten dry.

What years do the foods expire?  That is at least a 7-month time span. I know they make their dry dog food in several different facilities....am assuming it is the same for the dry cat food.  Could you post the complete information from the bags you do have.  On the cat food, it may only be one line consisting of letters and numbers.

I'm kind of confused.  Are the stores letting you actually open the bags and smell them or did you buy all these?  Sorry for a dumb question.  Tongue

No way of telling what Wellness will do when you call them. One time I had to send some canned food to them that I had questions on, but other times I didn't send them anything.

Thanks so much for your help.  Paulie is eating the food but honestly I think he would eat anything Grin.  When I went to each store I would tell them I was having a problem with the food having a werid smell, they would let me purcahse the bag, smell it and then return it if I thought it wasn't right.  The numbers on the bag are 16 Dec 2011 3450 Z11.  The food also is much dryer than normal.   I love Paulie so much and I couldn't imaging having him get sick from me trying to feed him a good brand of food.   Thanks so much again for your help.

If it smells "off", it probably is. Maybe the bags went bad due to poor warehousing conditions.. not uncommon at all. Different stores in your area would have the same distributor/warehouse which could explain same smell from the different dates/stores. Or Wellness switched ingredients, or sources for ingredients.

ps if it seems bad, it may not be good to feed...
There are a lot of good alternative brands with similar ingredients, you should be able to avoid setting off kitty allergies. Good luck, and I hope the stores or company will reimburse you for the money.

Welcome mycatpaulie ! I would not feed anything that looks or smells off or very different from normal. I hope you can return some of the food, but remember you will need at least 2 cups for testing. I hope Wellness will want to test it, but you should keep more for testing elsewhere in case Paulie should become ill from it.
I have a bag of Freshwater trout from Go by Petcurean. No corn, guar gum or chicken, but it does have chicken fat as the 4th ingredient. Don't know if that would bother him or not. Natural Balance may have something as well as California Natural. Natures Logic makes a salmon & duck, but the duck might irritate him too. I hope you can find a bag of his regular thats ok or a safe switch. You might want to call the store/stores where you bought it as well as the FDA & your state Dept of Agriculture too. Its possible they will test too. If you have a 2nd bag with the same codes thats not open, keep that too.

Thank you both so much for your help.  My mom just went to a petsmart about 15 miles a way to check there.  I really hope it smells normal.  Do you guys know if anywhere would be able to test the food on a weekend or will I have to wait until Monday.  I found this number online Non-emergencies for veterinary products call FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine at 1-888-FDA-VETS (1-888-332-8387).  Thanks so much again for your help!

Don Earl helps in getting pet food tested. His site is  www.pfpsa.org .  You may want to contact him for information. But this testing process does take time.

Welcome mycatpaulie. Another question to ask when you talk w/the co. rep at wellness is to find out where the salmon is sourced from along w/wild caught or farmed.

Welcome mycatpaulie,

If you're looking for a completely fish-based food, you may be able to find Orijen 6 Fish formula in your area:

http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/products/6fishcatIngredients.aspx

You may also be able to find Acana Pacifica (it has some chicken fat but no chicken):

http://www.championpetfoods.com/acana/show-product.php?formulation=pfc

Hope Paulie is OK after the bad batch of Wellness. I've run across a bad batch of Fromm Duck where it smelled kindof like turpentine. It was the fat that had oxidized that made it smell that way. If your Wellness had been stored in hot temperatures in a warehouse, it's possible that this could have happened as well.

Thanks for your help everyone.  I talked to someone at the company today and they said to send a bag back and that no one else has complained about a smell.  I went to one more store today and the bag still smelled the same.  Please let me know if you hear anything about this food and thanks again!
