Two weeks ago, I opened a new case of 3oz Wellness chicken.  June 2013 date.
Cats ate it for breakfast without their usual enthusiasm.
The last meal at midnight was Wellness turkey, 5 oz cans, June 2013 date.
The next morning, I awoke to cats with zero appetite and massive amounts of vomit all over the house.

Cats refused the 5.5oz cans of chicken June 2013, for breakfast.
Tried the 3 oz cans of chicken and they refused that too.

They ate the Wellness beef and chicken 3 oz with a March 2013 date and there were no problems.

That night I fed Sneakers the Wellness chicken 3 oz.  Sneakers is amazing, I call her the vaccuum cleaner because she'll eat anything.  The next morning, there was vomit everywhere, in her cage, in her litter box, on the floor, outside the cage.  She had many urines in her box and her stool was formed but it was tannish yellow.  Called the vet.....this flipped me out.......and she had me bring Sneaks in for some fluids.

I thought there might be a stomach bug in the house, although there is zero contact between Sneaks and the others in the house and I wash my hands like a maniac.  Vet said right away it was something with the food.

So, I stopped the Wellness chicken and turkey both size cans and fed alternatives.  All cats were fine and all were eating nicely.

This evening for dinner, I decided to give Sneaks a 3 oz chicken Wellness.  She hissed at the food bowl Shocked  I dumped the food and tried a 3 oz turkey.  She refused it as well, but no hissing.  I gave her a Wellness Beef and chicken 3 oz and she ate it with gusto.

Tried 5 oz turkey (3cans)and 5 oz chicken (3 cans) on the 6 for dinner and I threw everything away.  Chicken and turkey were refused.  Tried the 3 oz chicken (opened 6 cans) and they refused.  Tried the 3 oz turkey (opened 6 cans) and they refused.

Tried another manufacturer and all cats ate with gusto.
Tonight there was a raccoon trying to open my trash pail.  Just for the heck of it, I put some Wellness turkey into a paper bowl and left it by my garbage can.  Two raccoons came up and sniffed it and then walked away.  I picked up the bowl and put it in the trash.

This is really starting to worry and bother me.

Any ideas?  Any thoughts?  My cats are not fussy eaters at all and yet I am having a horrible time and they are willing to starve rather than eat Wellness.

I stopped feeding all flavors when Smoggy got horrible diarrhea. The two cans I have left are Turkey 5 oz and Chicken 5 oz best by June 2013. He didn't have any vomiting. I don't know what's going on with Wellness. I hope your kitties are all ok Peg.

Peg and Ned,
What is the plant code on the cans you are having trouble with?  Mandy has been eating the chicken  3 oz. June 15 2013 cans without any problems.  They have Menu codes.  Also no problem with turkey and chicken and beef March 2013 3 oz. cans - Menu codes.

I just recently started feeding Mandy some Wellness along with her Fancy Feast.  She seems to like it, but now I don't know whether to continue with it.   Undecided

Smoggy's horrible diarrhea came after he had the Chicken and Herring but I don't have the can. He continued to have soft poops/diarrhea until I stopped all flavors of Wellness. He's ok now but only eating dry food and baked chicken.

If I needed one more kick to push me to stop feeding Wellness canned, this might be it.

Most of my 5.5 oz chicken cans are 10/Jun/12.  I have not noticed any problems with this (at least not that I remember).

I have some 5.5 oz chicken cans dated 21/Apr/13 which is close to the date that people seem to be having trouble.  I'm wondering if I shouldn't use these.

My turkey is 3 oz and is 14/Dec/12.  I haven't noted trouble with this either.

Nevertheless, Lulu, my usual big wet eater is refusing all Wellness now which has been really weird.  Chami, not a huge wet fan but is also refusing most Wellness.  Sunday and the Tinies depends on the day.  Yoyo has been eating whatever I give him.

We haven't had any vomiting issues, but the diarrhea from eating the fish variety was really, really horrible.   Angry

Still feeding 3 oz Wellness turkey, beef & chicken, turkey & salmon, chicken & herring to various cats in my crew with no problems other than what appears to be occasional taste variation in some lots that causes them not to gobble it down as well.

I will check my current can numbers later and post them.

No one has vomited, no one has had loose stools, no one has so much as belched!  I'm feeding Wellness to two 13-year-old senior ladies and a 4-year-old strapping male.

Notice the dates.  Judging by the average expiration period on canned pet food, these are cans made AFTER WellPet committed to PetSmart.

As I have noted on another post, several people I know have cited sudden and severe issues with Wellness Senior dog resulting in diet changes and immediate reversal of symptoms.  Again, fresh bags made after the expansion agreement.

All returns cited a change in appearance (which isn't uncommon, but with Wellness generally means an ingredient change) a change in odor, and one dog actually refused to eat the food entirely.  For a week.  Finally the owner returned the bag and got a stern warning - if your pet ever turns away from a new bag of a regular food, TAKE IT BACK IMMEDIATELY.

The point is, more and more issues are coming forward since the production was ramped up.  Wellness is officially off of the table of acceptable foods in my house.

We are feeding theses dates with no complaints or problems.  Fizzy looks healthier and is eating better since adding Wellness back into the rotation.

Isn't it a rotten shame that seemingly on any given day in any given plant a rotten run of pet food can be produced that causes
absolute pet disaster and we the owners all know it as our pets end up at the vet's? I'm so damned sick of hearing it. Just broke
into two cases of Wellness 5.5 oz cans that I bought from PetSmart to check the production codes, all from MW plants and with
BB dates of April 2013. But now I wonder, too.

Yikes. Back to hoarding March dates for me. Actually, mine are not so happy with this batch either. Jan and Feb were really good but I can't find them anymore (3 oz turk and chix - Menu). It's kinda hit and miss and they've been diving into Weruva with no trouble so I think I'll be getting more of that for now.

These are Ned's dates that caused Smoggy to have diarrhea.

An email from my friend asked me if I was having any trouble with Wellness.
Her 3 cats had vomiting and diarrhea for 10 days.  They are okay now.
Blood work was normal.

My friend's time stamps were different.
I can't find the email now.

You know what would be helpful for outbreaks like these?  A spreadsheet - Brand, Flavour, Size, Lot#, Date in the first columns, and then a tally system - x number of cats reacted negatively, y number reacted positively.

Might help to really narrow down the targets both positive and negative.

Something like this should be used for each of these "outbreaks"... might make the trip to the pet supply store more of an educated guess and less of a crapshoot - trying to keep track of the information in your head as you scan through the posts can be difficult.

We could list them at the end of posts, as well, each of us adding our own information on and reposting, chain letter style.  Would add to a lot of data on the system repetitively, but would also allow you to go right to the last entry and see where things stand.

Just a thought...   Huh

Not a bad idea since Wellness is so hit or miss lately. The cans Nancy & I had trouble with were all bb 4/13 or 6/13 with fish. All 5.5 oz & I don't have the codes anymore.
