Hello! Can someone help me please....is hydrolysed soy protein okay for cats? I am living in Argentina and have found a dry food that is the best I can find, but am concerned about the protein source. This is from Royal Canin and they say it's very digestible. I am doing some home feeding, but Solomon loves his kibbles and it's so expensive to ship from the States and will have to stop sooner or later..as my budget allows. Thanks for any help!! Deborah

hydrolyzed soy protein ... can have msg and many cats and dogs have issues with msg ... also soy is a top allergen in general ... If you have no allergy issues then try it but watch for any weird symptoms...
on a side note soy protein like tofu is often used in cats with uti issues with good results

Soy is a known goitrogen and interferes with the proper function of the thyroid glands.... in other words, you might run the risk of your cat developing either hypOthyoidism (rare) or hyperthyroidism (common). Why risk it? There are better foods out there.

Most soy is also genetically modified.

I'll dig up some info later for you, Deborah. Meanwhile, can you post the ingredients of some of the cat foods available in Argentina? This way, some of the regulars here can post comments on them.

From what I have seen in the pet stores and/or Vet shops...the main brands are Royal Canin, Ekenuba, various other small brands...
main ingredients..corn, animal by products, and such...I don't have any of them except the Royal Canin listed above...it "seemed" the safest until I had the concern about the soy. But I know there are vegetarin dog and maybe cat food out there...so what do they use as their main protien source??
I thought RC would be the best of them...but all their many brands contain corn as first ingredient and the protien sources are not human grade. I have been searching for sometime now...Eagle Pack is coming here but not for another year or so..but on their list to notifiy me when it happens. First Mate is in Chile but won't ship here...waiting on them too.
Thanks again... Deborah

Thanks for the links on soy....and the links on home cooking....sorry but issues there too...I don't have access to a lot of the supplements needed...so guess I will need to "wing it"....I do have the missing link supplement...and will add that to something I am going to try....steamed brown rice cooked in organic chicken stock...organic chicken livers...poached....frozen peas....then put into the food processor...and add the missing link.... Solomon loves his liver and chicken breast....so I hope this will work for him...going to try one recipe I saw w/ chicken thighs, egg shells & carrots... I will continue to have food shipped until I can either transfer him over to home cooking totally or do 50/50 with kibbles and home cooking...I am NOT going to take any chances on my handsome boy! He's worth every penny it costs to ship food here!!! I so appreciate your help!! Deborah in Argentina

Thanks for your thoughts Kaffe! Solomon ate half of the dish I gave him of the new mixture..was happy for that and this a.m., as I forgot to pick up the dish, he had almost finished it off overnight...YEAH!!
I was a little runny, so I added a few bits of a lovely multi grain bread we get from a fantastic bakery near by...very dense and hearty...and they used only organic grains for all their products.
I am happy with the results...and will keep this going for a while and then add other recipes that I hope will work as well....
I so appreciate all of your ideas, suggestions and expertise with my challenges.
Warm Regards, Deborah in Argentina

Deborah- Freezing & then defrosting helps when its runny. After freezing the meat acts like a sponge & seems to absorb some of the extra liquid.Good luck with the transition.
