Today I had a very hard time finding NV Instinct rabbit formula for cats in any of the stores that normally sell it.  The places that were out said that they had ordered it from their distributors, but did not receive it in any orders this week.  I did finally find it in one store with a very savvy owner, who said that she had read that NV had a shortage of rabbit awhile back, and had stocked up extra in her store in anticipation.  The NV website does have a note about a rabbit dry product being in high demand and available only in certain markets, but does not say anything about a shortage of their other rabbit products.  Rabbit canned NV Instinct is the one thing that all 5 of my cats will eat consistently, so I like to have some on hand.  (I do use other several foods also.  I also remember the posts on this forum a couple of months ago about some of the rabbit being from China, so no one needs to remind me of that issue.)

Is anyone else having this problem?  And are other brands that use rabbit experiencing shortages?  Those of you who buy the frozen rabbit meat--are you having supply problems?

For those of you who rely on rabbit-based foods because of pets with allergies or sensitivities, I though I'd post this as a heads-up.  You may want to stock up on what you can get.

catbird,

Did your store have the other varieties of Instinct?  The feed store I go to is down to one case of NV Instinct.  It just so happens to be rabbit, which we don't regularly use.  No other varieties left.

i buy frozen rabbit ground from Hare Today. haven't had a problem as of yet and plan to order this week. let you know if there's a problem.

for those of you who feed rabbit and need it for your pet's needs, consider raw for a possible supply source. you can join the carnivore supply group to find rabbit in your area. not all of it comes from specialized producers. some comes from rabbit breeders.

Did your store have the other varieties of Instinct?
One of the stores was out of all Instinct cans except for a couple of cans of chicken.  They did have Prairie, which I don't use.  The other stores had a good supply of the other types, just no rabbit.  The store that was out of Instinct said that they had ordered their usual amounts from the distributor, but none had been delivered.  They were way down on some other upper-tier types of canned like Evanger's, too, said that the distributor was not able to supply their full order.  (These are all small businesses with one or two small stores in my city.)

I hope that the shortages are a good sign that these small companies are just suffering 'growing pains' and will solve the problem by adding more employees and expanding the company.

Same situation here.  Dropped in at my local pet food supply store the other day ... the only NV Instinct cans they had left on the shelves were chicken and beef  Sad  I wanted to get some lamb, but walked out empty handed.
