Experiences with non-recall Royal Canin products

Has anyone had any negative experiences with non-recall, Royal Canin products?

Back in February, before I was feeding my cats exclusively a homemade diet, I was feeding them Royal Canin's Sensible Choice Dry Kitten 34 Formula.

The breeder was feeding them this pet food and I was trying to ween them off of it because I feel that dry food is hard your pet's kidneys.

The last 2 bags were making them sick. The first bag I threw out and bought another, thinking maybe it was spoiled. The second bag was thrown out before it was half gone. The youngest had diarrhea every time he ate it and came down with a urinary infection. Now that they are off of it, both cats are healthier. They're more active and playful.

The first four ingredients are chicken meal, rice, corn gluten meal & corn. It has rice in it and I wonder if it was contaminated with melamine. Maybe there could have been cross contamination during production???

Needless to say, I will never buy their products again. I wouldn't trust any pet food company that has had a recall on any of their products.

I fed my chihuahua Royal Canin Chihuahua 28 at the same time as Life's Abundance along with human food. In his 2 1/2 years, he was sick with the runs and throwing up bile one day, a couple of more times throwing up bile, he didn't eat much or put on too much weight, drank little, urinated alot. A couple of months ago a week before the recalls, his liver enzyme blood test on a scale of 10-100 was 298. My vet said something is poisoning him in his environment or food supply. He asked me what dog food I was feeding him. He wants to check him soon to see if there is some improvement. In the meantime I notified Royal Canin and asked them to check this product out if it was contaminated. They replied it was ok. They had a Vitamin D overdose issue previously. The Life's Abundance contained menadione which has since been removed. It is toxic to the liver. So exactly what has hurt my dog, I do not know but Royal Canin was a part of his diet. He at the time was 3.9 pounds so a little bit of poison would make a mark on his health, no. Right now he is up to 4.2 pounds. I am home cooking his food.

I am so tempted to have this Royal canin tested, but these testing labs are so expensive. Somewhere around $130.00 - $150.00.

If you are worried about a foods effect on your pet then just change it. Don't take chances! There are still new recalls coming out!!!

And it doesn't really matter what is on the label since apparently that doesn't have much to do with what is in the bag! Plus there are problems with cross contamination, too.

You can home cook, especially if you have dogs, since they are much easier to feed, (nowhere near as picky as cats). And Natura is testing all their foods for melamine so they are a good option also, especially in the short term. They make Innova, Evo, and California Natural.

I too have had problems with Royal Canin. I had fed yorkshire 28 and my yorkie was throwing up and had vomited yellow bile. Would love to have it tested.

Royal Canin/MediCal is being sued in Canada by this firm: www.rochongenova.com

Take a look at the STATEMENT OF CLAIM which is on the site. The suit mentions Vitamin D toxicity but it also makes mention of "ANY ILLNESS" caused by their food.

All dry food is junk food for our pets. Get to know your local butcher and switch to meat, which is what most people are doing these days.

No one trusts the pet food companies anymore. I will NEVER buy commercial food again, after these VETERINARY PRESCRIBED (and, I might add, aggressively pushed) products caused by female Siamese to get FD.

I'm in on the lawsuit. Pass this info along to others, please, as many people do now know about this one.

There is also ANOTHER lawsuit in Florida that was filed about the MISLEADING CLAIMS TO HEALTH of all these pet foods.....

I'm surprised they didn't bring in My Late Great Gwainy Cwap Food - Priority (the generice for Deli Cat - which, as an uninformed consumer - thought was Good Cat Food).  So - unfortunately - I have no lawsuits to join (not even sick kitties - I was VERY LUCKY - it probably killed others over the years in their later ages).  I do greive, tear and cry, and pass TONS OF {{{{HHHHUUUUGGGGSSSS}}}} for EVERYONE that has either lost pets, or have sickened pets, from this mess.

Hi,

I purposely waited for my Royal Canin [non-recalled food] test results to come back before responding. Check out the forum link below:

I can't tell you how relieved I am to know that the food is safe to eat. This batch, at least.

My dog got sick back in April, after a week of eating a new bag of Royal Canin Sensible Choice Adult Chicken and Rice formula. She had been eating this formula for at least a couple years. Because it was not on the recall list at the time she got sick, the vet couldn't figure out what was wrong. Royal Canin had recalled the senior formula chicken and rice, but not the adult formula.  I called and wrote to them, asking what the difference was, and they said the adult version didn't use rice protein, and was safe. Well, the adult formula ended up being recalled on May 11th. However, I had already stopped feeding it to my dog, giving her home-made food instead.

One of the issues with diagnoses was her atypical symptoms- instead of excessive thirst, she would not drink water at all, though her kidney values were too high, and she was urinating excessively. I had to flavor her water with chicken broth to get her to drink. She also had NO loss of appetite.  She still wanted to eat as much as I'd give her. To complicate things futher, she's had problems with incontinence since she was a year old, so her excessive urination was being blamed on her age (she's 8 ), though the onset was sudden and acute. The vet thought she had kidney disease.

After a month of home -cooked diet (chicken & brown rice), her kidney values dropped to the lower end of normal (good thing), and she has shown significant improvement.  She's still not totally well- she gets tired more quickly, so she can't do our daily 7+ mile walks more than a couple times a week. But for a time, she could barely do a mile, if that. So at least she's improved.

I'd like to add that she had slightly elevated kidney values about a year ago, and the vet assumed it was age-related.  I'm not a scientist, but I can't help but think there is some correlation between her new, home made diet (and yes, I supplement with vitamins, bone meal, etc.), and her improved kidney function. The vet remarked that her lates blood work was just great for a large-breed dog of her age.

How is 8 years old age related?  Glad to hear your doggie is doing better (at least an occasional 7 mile romp is good - I can't even do that  Roll Eyes )
