Does anyone have access to information that describes the nutrient requirements of cats?
I would like to find a "user friendly" version. Have looked at the online book version, but it seems complicated. LOL. Maybe I'm just too dense.
Many weeks ago someone posted a link, and when you went to the website, there was another link to a great brochure that listed the requirements (I believe) in terms of daily nutritional requirements.
Silly me. I didn't save the link to the brochure. If anyone has that brochure link, I'd love to know what it is, but ANY information wrt the nutritional requirements would be appreciated.
Thanks.

5CatMom, I have posted this in the past. Not sure if this is what you are talking about. It has free downloadable brochures for cats and dogs with some basic information. The book itself is $265. Yikes http://dels.nas.edu/banr/petdoor.html

Yikes http://dels.nas.edu/banr/petdoor.html that's a good easy link! the brochure gives the exact amounts and then you can cross reference the vitamins/etc with food sources. i just cross referenced most of the vitamins, and you can easily meet the requirements with real food (on the cats, haven't checked dogs as i need to work!). now i'm starting to wonder how much supplementing is *really* needed. it's something i tend to go back and forth on and here i go yet again! lol!~

I found the part about cats having a weak thirst drive and canned food being better for some cats of interest.

it's funny. i have always feed cats canned food. dry seemed so unappealing! i left it out for snacks, but they always got wet. i also rotated for variety. both wet food and rotating diets are now being recommended. i didn't learn about the water issue until i started raw a few years ago. i've always had decent drinkers. sometimes it's just finding out what they want to drink out of! lol!~ our childhood cat would drink out of a certain coffee cup on the bathroom counter. it's actually a good set up 'cause it's so easy to refresh the water throughout the day i was just reading something on niacin depletion and corn based diets (for humans) . . . yes, i've spent the afternoon researching since you posted the link. much more interesting than designing the x-mas product i'm supposed to be working on

I switched two of my three cats to all canned food last May because of all the reading I had regarding canned food being better than dry. They do seem much healthier. One of them never had a big thirst drive, but the other drinks a lot less water than he used to.

JustMe and Straybaby,
Thanks for the links. Now if I can just get them to work. Are you able to just click and go there?
Haven't been able to get the link to work, but it may be my ISP.
The brochure is great - easy for the average person to understand.

JustMe,
Thanks. I've done lots of clicking, but the link won't work for me tonight. My pop-up blocker is turned off, so I don't know what's going on.
Did you actually click on the link and it worked for you?

5CatMom,
Yes, I was able to download and read the cat one, 16 pages I believe. It's in PDF format.

Well, thanks you two.
I've checked out the obvious stuff, but can't find out what's going on. But I'll save the link. Maybe I can get it fixed tomorrow.

Wish I had known a lot sooner about wet versus dry for cats. Always gave them a treat of wet several times a week and the older ones got wet because they were more likely to eat it. Just a few months of mostly wet now, and I see the difference. I was always told not to give them too much wet, that it would upset their stomachs. Wow, how wrong was that!

Well, I downloaded it and printed. I was actually disappointed with the file. Much too vague. No really solid information regarding protein/fat/carb ratios. The information regarding wet versus dry was soft peddled - and in fact said you could just wet down the dry food (which I have read can breed bacteria). As for the nutrients, might be helpful if you raw feed, but I think most major food products (i.e. Wellness, Innova, etc) would meet requirements for vitamins/minerals. Calorie requirements I think are overstated for most cats, based on my experience. So, all in all, I didn't get much from this brochure.

Jenny,
Thanks for your opinion. Do you have a source for this info that you like better?
Just looking for good sources here.
