Question for anyone who uses this.  This morning I opened a can of I think it was Beef and Liver (I was late so I'm not sure it that is the flavor) and it was so full it was almost overflowing the top of the can.  Can this be safe? Usually there is some space at the top of the can.  I didn't give it to Socks but I shoved most of it in a jar and stuck it in the fridge.

Can someone let me know if this seems right?

TIA

Hopefully some experienced Newman's Organic customers will reply but you did the right thing taking the better safe then sorry approach.

Since 07 I became extremely picky when it came to every can.  I've returned my fair share of a few cans to the store.
That didn't look right, smell right, etc.  Buying by the case minimizes the problem of inconsistencies. But even in that case I still inspect every single one right after opening.

Ranger,

I use some Newman's Own.  I've seen that some the cans are more full than others, but I use the 3 oz cans.  Not sure which yours are.  I've never seen one that looks overflowing, though.

The way I figure it, these days it's better to be safe than sorry.  I'd rather waste a can of cat food than worry there might be something wrong with what I fed them.  I figure it's a small price to pay for a tiny bit more peace of mind, but that is just my opinion.  There may not be anything wrong with the food.  Hopefully this will be an isolated instance.

I am in contact with Newman's Own since yesterday as I am having horrible problems with the Organic Line from Uruguay.

Beef and Liver...............0023623  05/14/10
Organic Beef...............  0014085  05/13/10
Organic Liver.................0056144  05/29/10

I picked up some cans of each flavor in my local grocery store at the end of December.
All flavors were well received by all cats and it looked and smelled and tasted good to me.

So at the end of January, I ordered 2 cases of each flavor and have had nothing but problems.
Beef is absolutely GREEN.....I know it's grass fed, but this is insane.
Much like Ranger the cans seem to be so over filled that there is no hiss when I pull on the pull top.
Organic Liver has the most vile smell on the planet and I love liver so this smelled all wrong.
The Beef and Liver literally has a completely RED center under the green layer at the top of the can.

The few kitties that picked at this threw up immediately.
Other cats have refused the food out right.

The refusals and vomitting started right after I got the cases in mid February.
I tried again yesterday morning and everyone refused except Rikers who took 2 mouthfuls.
Poor girl vomitted like there was no end in sight.

Newman's is sending me a prepaid mailer and they want 6 cans of each flavor sent to them.

DO NOT FEED. Save a couple cans of each flavor for evidence Peg.

Lets get the word out.

Not to worry Steve.
I feel horrible about what happened with Rikers as this little girl has never even barfed up a hairball.

Her appetite this evening seems to be okay and I am debating whether or not to take her to the vet to be checked out.

The fact that I am being asked for 6 cans of each flavor bothers me too.

What I also found odd was when I called the company I ordered it from, they are usually quick to refund my money, if the cats don't like or can't eat something and they recommend I donate thie food to a shelter.  They told me NOT to donate.  It was at their insistance that I call Newman's.  They even provided the phone number.

These are the 3 oz cans only and my problems only pertain to the Organic Beef lines from Uruguay.

I have a case of the beef with the same best buy date, 3 ounce.

Please note that the numbers I highlighted in red in your list change from can to can.   Maybe that is why they want 6 cans.

Peg,

Could you send me the phone number for Newman's?  I always have to contact them by email.  No number on their site that I've been able to find.  Thanks.

It's important. We may be the first responders uncovering something "large" here.

Peg use your judgment and experience. Better to barf up quickly. That is the bodies defense mechanism and it works quite effectively although I prefer not barfing up my dinner if it's spoiled food but it does get rid of the problem quick but not very elegantly.

Beef Imports from Uruguay (To U.S.) decreased significantly, from 355 million pounds in 2007 to 66 million pounds in 2008, as competing markets in the European Union and Russia provided better market opportunities for Uruguayan beef.

Not on our priority list right now but I wonder if the preferred customers (European Union and Russia) are getting preferential treatment and were getting "leftovers".

This is my post in the Experiences Section regarding this lot of food, posted September 28, 2008.  We've used 4 cans out of 24.  Same date but codes are different.

my codes from that case all start with 00051XX and 00052XX and followed by "N1"

http://itchmoforums.com/cat-food-experiences-by-brand/newmans-own-organic-beef-canned-cat-food-t6258.0.html;msg89209#msg89209

Nothing unusal to report on those 4 cans.  Will be interested to see what Peg finds out from the company.

Will the company necessarily respond to Peg about what they find? Is Newman's Own likely
to do that?

Peg, can you make that a condition of supplying the cans to Newman's, that you be copied
on all test results? And get it in writing.
