Two of our late GSDs used to love tomatoes. They'd raid the garden and eat them whole. I never looked into whether they were good or bad for them to eat.

I wouldn't worry a couple of my own homegrown tomatoes, but unless the pesticide residue is monitored, I'd wonder about the risk/benefit ratio with tomato pomace for pets in food fed daily. http://www.naturapet.com/tools/ingredient.asp?alpha=T&id=62Tomato PomaceTomato pomace is the mixture of tomato skins, pulp, and crushed seeds.
This is an inexpensive by-product with the potential for pesticide residues in discarded tomato skins, which are the largest component of tomato pomace. http://www.separationsnow.com/coi/cda/detail.cda?id=714&type=Feature&chId=4&page=1"The idea of recycling tomato pomace is not new. Recycling has the dual advantages of providing a new source for valuable chemicals whilst reducing the amount of waste produced by the tomato processing industry. However attempts have so far been limited by the cost of extraction, the use of toxic solvents and the presence of pesticides. The European TOM project, which started in May last year and which will last for two years, aims to develop a safe and economical way of overcoming these limitations, relying on innovative molecular affinity bodies for the application of affinity chromatography."

Well I listened in on his show via the internet thingy and did hear the Nutro part along with some of the wildest cuss words Ive ever heard, lol I thought I'd heard them all, woo-hoo my ears are still burning, lol anyhow he is really mad at Nutro and this is what he said, Im paraphrasing everything as my notes are pretty jumbled...: he said he's an animal lover and donated heavily to the Katrina rescue and some other organization, didnt catch it......said he has a mini-doberman that he dearly loves and has a myspace page devoted to his dog. He said last week his dog was vomiting really bad so he took him to the vet. Said he was diagnosed with pancreas issues and is now diabetic. He also had bladder stones and kidney issues. He said he found out that he was feeding tainted Nutro pet food and its from the recalls last year!!!???......he said they are packets so Im guessing it was wet food. He said he is waiting for confirmation so I dont know if that means he is getting his food tested but he should know in about 2 weeks but he said something about starting a huge crusade all over the internet etc.......said something about lawsuit, etc.....anyhow his advice to anyone feeding Nutro is " throw da s--t in da f-----g garbage pail".

Have to wonder where he would get recalled food over a year after the recall. Sounds like his problem may be with a retailer in this case. But, what retailer would be stupid enough not to have returned the food to Nutro and then put it back on the shelf? Will be interesting to hear what else comes of this and also to hear more details about who, what, where, when, and why! Thanks for your summary, Sandi K.

You are absolutely right Carol, he also said that if anyone is thinking it cant happen to them, it can. Thats what he thought and now he knows. He is very angry and worried about his dog who was still in the hospital but I think he said can maybe come home today or tomorrow...he also mentioned something about Petco so I dont know if thats where he bought the food or not. So is this old recall food still out there? Good Gawd, I hope not. Even if he has "potty mouth", he made it very clear that he truly loves his doggie and I guess if anything brings people together that wouldnt normally meet, its the love of our furbabies.

I couldn't tell if it was the brand and type of food that was recalled or the actual dates that were on the recall list...so now I guess I'll have to check his site now and listen....but potty mouth or not he is a fellow animal lover who is going through a horrible time so i will just overlook his vocabulary choice! I did send the show the link to CA! So he knows he is not alone!

So true Don, I'll gladly be his cheerleader if he can help accomplish something. I hope we hear more about his situation and his dog. I'll have to go look at his doggie at the myspace page.

That would be interesting news if recalled food is back on the market.
The Federal court granted these scumbags permission to dispose of massive quantities of pet food they been holding. A ballpark guess is we're talking about on the order of 50 million pounds of poisoned pet food. No oversight whatsoever as to how that is to be accomplised in such a way as to insure it doesn't make its way back into pet food in one form or another.
I agree, it would be so easy for the PFI to dispose of this poison via the rendering plant! From there - back into being made into NEW petfood! YIKES!!!

Looks like complaints are still coming in...these two are new... http://consumeraffairs.com/pets/nutro.html Shannon of San Anotnio TX (07/13/08) I have two dogs and have always feed them Nutro. I switched to the Blue Brand recently for the wet food however keep them on the Nutra Ultra dry food. The reason for the switch late last year I noticed that the Nutro Lamb and Rice wet food had green things in the food. They were almost pee like little green balls. I knew something was not right.
I went back to Petsmart and they told me they would give me a credit. I still had the food at home. So I called Nutro and talked to a young man named Rich. Told him about my issue and he said he was going to send me a bag and coupons for replacement food. I said okay and waited weeks, nothing come. I still had the food and called again. I was told again that I would get sent a return box to send back the food and some coupons. A few more weeks go by and again nothing came. By now its the end of January and I started looking for new food.
During the time they ate this food I did notice that my dogs seemed withdrawn, and lethargic. My one dog would itch and itch and itch. He never had a problem prior but even today he just itches. I took him to the vet and he said there is no reason he should be itching. Now I have to say I think it is related to this food. After reading teh CA article about 6 dogs passing. I wont take the chance. I am goign to try and find a new dry food and fast. I have been a loyal Nutro fan for a long time and am disappointed because now I believe there maybe something that Nutro foods are not sharing with us.
Debbie of Clovis CA (07/13/08) This morning I went out to feed my dog. He turned his nose at the food and drank his water instead. I asked my husband what was up with him and he said he was sure it was the food. About six weeks ago we purchased a 35 pound bag of Nutro Max Natural for our Chesapeake Bay Retriever. The day after the first consumption he threw up all over the yard and for a 4 days following he continued with vomiting and diarrhea. Honestly I figured it was a change in food that caused the problem so we mixed his old food 3/4 to 1/4 of his new food and noticed that he did better, still soft stools and this gagging choking thing. He did begin to turn his nose up at his dog food more and more.
With the heat, this is high BBQ season in our area and our extended family always saves leftovers for Chance and he has had quite of supplement to his dog food. Still he has lost weight. I am sure you would think that I should have picked up on something - maybe the fact that our Maltese puppy ocassionally threw up when he got to Chance's food-no more than a morsel because Chance does not share. Both dogs have developed goopy eyes and ears and Chance had a lesion on his chest on Monday that I noticed while bathing him. Also, for the first time I have noticed Chance dragging his bottom on the grass to itch an irritation. Still, I let it all go because we have other issues at home, my husband has Stage IV metastatic Adenocarcinoma with chemo every 14 days.
Sadly my dogs are not getting the attention they need or deserve because of the time and energy we spend trying to grab a hold of this condition and it's daily toll on our lives. We purchsed the Nutro because I felt bad about buying the cheapest dog food I could find and wanted a higher quality for Chance who I felt I could give a better tasting and quality food to make up for the lack of time I had not had to spend with him. The cost of the food was 3X what I had been spending and was a toll on us. Usually the food last 3 weeks, this one has lasted this long because he has no interest in it. We have about 5 lbs left. Seems he is smarter than I am.
This morning something clicked when I looked at Chance and his matted eyes and thought about the lesion and noticed the weight loss and decided to come in and look up Nutro and almost fell over. The thought that I could be slowly poisioning my dogs. Can I have my dog food tested? I can't afford care for the dogs, if I could I would but honestly it's my husbands life or theirs. I feel horrible.
Economics damage is the cost of food and the home remedies we have purchased to try to fix the symptoms that I did not put together. Not to mention the unspent monies that need to be spent to care for these dogs. Physically they both need treatment, losing these dogs at this point when we are about to lose my husband would devaste my children as young as 6. I am so upset.
