REPORTS ON POSSIBLE DOG FOOD POISON SUNDAY,MAY 4TH,20073.00 P.M.Discussed first concern with Nutro product –Christa/ Manager- Petsmart HoustonShe was also part of information relayed by Nutro onsite rep and heard his description and some of my conversation with him.

Less than a week ago my healthy dog passed away from what emergency vet called ‘sudden death’. At this moment, confirmation of what caused death is not clear but vet may suspect dry food was bad and I am going to have tested. (Vomit was all dry food given to my dog which was NUTRO PRODUCT. Hoping that I did not kill my dog by giving him what I thought was good food, I stopped in to Petsmart today to calm my nerves and be assured that the food in question is fine. What I found was the shelves that contained Nutro Natural Choice were almost bare.(That never has happened) At the aisle with Nutro food they had a Nutro rep stationed here. When I questioned him about why no food was here, he stated that no ‘recall’ is in effect and Nutro just happened to shut down a few plants who were producing what he termed as ,not as tasty food’ and the ‘quality’ was not up to par.Common sense says that the only way a dog can relay that something is not ‘tasty’ is through death or sickness. Seeing that a dog can’t talk, I asked him how they would know it was not ‘tasty’? It seems far more plausible that a company whose main product is dog food would not shut down 2 plants and have no product unless some very extreme situations were coming to light. He stated that the food plant being shut and my dog dying were coincidence. Furthermore, the 800 number he gave me is not being answered now.( I GOT DIFFERENT ONE FROM PETSMART) I have a meeting with Petsmart tomorrow to discuss. I do not blame them right now for the death of my dog, but I stated to the manager I had a BIG issue with them allowing a Nutro rep to tell prospect clients some very vague, questionable, and misleading information, on the status of Nutro food. As noted, the 1-800 number just kept ringing. Additionally, I checked their web site-www.nutroproducts.com and found NO information regarding any plants being shut down. To me, that would be very significant information to relay to all consumers especially if supposed steps were being taken in the best interest of the dog because the food was not as ‘tasty’. Also, letting consumers know info on lack of product and when to expect more would seem to be the obvious steps for anybody not hiding something.I am wanting to save even one person the heartbreak and guilt I am going through and holding those parties accountable. I will not let this be swept under the rug and hopefully will get confirmation I am looking for with testing of Pet food I still have.

Is anyone else from Houston,Tx area or close by who may have has similar experience with Nutro ?

This is very disturbing, but fits with all the complaints at Consumer Affairs.

edited to add--it also does fit with those signs I have been seeing posted in the Nutro section (cat) of my local pet food store, saying their products may be in short supply.  I will have to look in the dog food section the next time I am there.

  I did a walk thru of the Nutro dog food isle in my local PetSmart today. It seemed that it was only certain flavors of the dry food that there were none of on the shelves. I saw no signs pertaining to why the shelves were empty.

The post at PC today got me thinking (uh-oh) and I remembered something back a few months but can't find it---the poster here had said he had his dog food tested and it showed melamine (I think) and that was in Sept of 2006 manufacture date--so in trying to jar my memory I went to the FDA site and I see alot of the Nutro products both cat and dog food with dates that would have been before the Nov 2006 manufacture date "starting" with the adulterated wheat flour.........don't know why--do we???

I lost my dog last year on Thankgiving Eve to a perplexing problem that 2 vets nor myself could figure out.  She showed all the signs of a poisoning but had no possiblity of getting into anything.  I greived and tried to move on.  A few months later reports of the the pet food contamination started flashing on the news and the food which I had been feeding her Nutro Choice Cuts Chicken and Brown Rice made the list.  Hmmm, let me check the pantry and of course there were still left over packs which I had probably figured I could give to someone else (T.G. I didn't).  Called FDA file complaint, they picked up the food vet reports took my statement....., and I heard nothing else from them.  Soon reports began to come out that the melamine was traced to a wheat gluten shipment not used to produce pet food at menu food until Nov. 2006.  I began to figure well these were probably produced before that date so I was probably wrong.  WELL, today I received a certified letter from the FDA telling me the food tested positive for melamine.  HMMM, I looked again at the dates for the food and they are SEPT 25, 2006 production date.

I hope everyone is with me at this point, if you check the FDA.gov list you will see that they changed the date for that one flavor.  If in fact when these packets were produced the tainted wheat gluten had not yet been supplied by ChemNutra then how did it find it's way into they packets of food my dog was eating from.  I believe there may be a problem with the dates the public has been supplied or possibly the melamine was also being supplied by another company.  In the back of my mind there is a worse fear we have not been told some dark secret.

Know this the melamine was in the food prior to the dates we have been given which now means this recall has been expanded backwards in time.

That the recall is expanding backwards in time is a BIG worry for many many pet owners right now... I know I am looking backwards in time since before the "official" recall periods to see if I had fed any of the foods implicated in the melamine scandal... and yes, I have!  Eukanuba 3oz cans!  Grrrr...!!!

I do not have the bag still as I typically open bag and put into large plasitc container that is air tight and keep for freshness.
I bought this on Easter Sunday.I am sending contents to testing labs that have been recommended. Meeting went well with Petsmart manager and I have been given time with GM tomorrow. I have spoken with him on the phone already and he does seem genuinely alarmed of the items he already has been informed of. I will let you know. Spoke with a reporter from consumer affairs today about letter I had sent to them and they posted. She wanted some additional information and was extremely helpful.

Was at my local feed store earlier, noticed they are stocking a new food they previously did not.  Asked if they were still carrying Nutro the gentleman told me they are only getting half of what they normally used to. Asked him if he was aware of complaints, so thought I would check consumer affairs, last complaint posted 5/18/08

Having just read that link Kathy--my jaw dropped---this one Helen of Louisville KY (05/18/08) is troubling....

I posted that I was a pet nutrition specialist for Nutro. My responsibilities were to educate pet owning consumers on the benefits of Nutro dog and cat foods, and treats as well as proper pet nutrition. As of last week, I have resigned. I do not feel comfortable promoting a product that is currently showing a very strong correlation with causing pet illness or death. It was enough to go through the pet recall last March and deal with an ill cat, now with the shortages of product on the shelf and consumer concerns and complaints, its just too much. I was concerned when MARS, Inc. bought out Nutro last May 2007 because Nutro for 82 years had stood on its own as a leader in pet specialty. This past year, Nutro has lost consumer confidence and shaken my confidence as well. Something is wrong and every time I've brought it up the chain, my concerns were brushed off.

All I kept hearing was about the wonderful Quality Controls Nutro has. Well my point is, many companies had quality controls before the pet food recall of 2007 that sickened and killed numerous pets due to melamine poisoning. Then to make things even worse, one of my four cocker spaniels was guzzling water this past month after opening the last bag, and drinking it like he would never get enough. He was peeing like a racehorse too. He was lethargic, refused to go for walks which he loves to do. He seemed like he wasn't feeling well. Initially I thought about diabetes. But then, I remembered the posts on this site and based on that I took him in to have a chemistry panel drawn. Thank goodness it was still WNL. I will have it redrawn this week. He did eventually have a UTI but that was caused by the catheterization that the vet did to get a urine sample. Go figure.. That happens. His stools have been bile colored though and also I've already switched their food to another premium brand.

My dogs are bewildered because they loved Nutro. So did I, until this past year. On my last day, one of the store managers of a store I worked with came to me and reported a very recent death of a young dog and the owner and vet highly suspect it was caused by Nutro Lamb and Rice (small bites). The store has collected a sample of food to be analyzed. I hope that the owner decides to have a necropsy done. It does cost to have one done but in this case, I would want to know what exactly happened. The vet stated to the owner and the owner relayed to the store that the dog died due multisytem failure starting with pancreatic failure. I sure hope that it wasn't the Nutro food but due to some of these sudden death incidents, it makes me fearful that it is. Again, a necropsy as well as testing the food for toxins is in order.

I have incurred about 165.00 of veterinary bills so far with my cocker spaniels' chemistry panel and urinalysis testing with exam. I do have pet insurance. If I have continued issues with this dog or others, then I will ask for an attorney.

Carol that is just horrible what this lady stated. I had used Nutro Ultra Holistic last year until I noticed my dog vomiting yellow bile and the stools being runny and greasy looking with a yellowish color. Also she ate grass to make herself throw-up as if something was bothering her stomach and she needed to get rid of it. So stopped feeding this and so glad I did because this woman just reinforces how this food can react on an animal.
