Is freeze-dried raw food a better option for dry-addicted cats than kibble?

My dry food eaters love the Stella and Chewy's freeze-dried "steaks," crumbled up.  However, this food appears to have even less moisture than regular dry food, which is a concern.  Dry-food cats are at risk of not getting enough water as it is.

When I first introduced it, I gave a small crumbled-up portion to each cat.  They all ate it eagerly, but one cat threw up almost immediately.  It appeared that the dried food expanded suddenly when it came in contact with moisture in her mouth or throat, and she choked, causing vomiting.  Since then, I have used the freeze-dried only as a treat for the cats, in a very small portion.

My cats absolutely will not eat it when it is mixed with water according to the package directions, or with any amount of water added.

Any opinions?  Do the benefits (no "mystery meals," no added supplements, no possible toxins from high temperatures, no possibly-rancid grease) outweigh the risks (less moisture, choking)?

I've used about 8 bags of this with no issues. Chicken variety (OnlyNaturalPets branded Stella&Chewy).
Ling, Miss Scarf & Barf, didn't throw it up.  I don't know if habit or not, but MK & Ling both drink water right after eating in the kibble dishes (kibble & the FD from Stella&Chewy or the NV brand are fed in the same dishes. I try to alternate & leaning slowly more & more to the freeze dried.) Scooter eats it too, but she doesn't drink water afterwards (she's more wet food eater and kibble/FD is dessert).

One thing for sure with cats, there's no truer words than YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary)

forgot your ?... I think the risks are way less for the freeze dried than kibble based on the ingredient panel and the batch test results they post on their website for salmonella & e-coli. Yup, I check the batch #'s. If I could find a kibble with the same ingredient panel & posted test results, I'd use it.

One thing, MK likes me to leave it chunkier, Ling & Scooter like the finely crunched the most. On occassion, I'll see MK or Scooter leave with a chunk to dine elsewhere.

Tongue Oh and.. I'd rather Scooter eat the FD than the FF wet. So far she's stubbornly pro wet foods of FF/Friskies.

I'd been wondering the same thing as for the dry part goes...but the ingredients certainly are better than (many of) the kibble we're eating.

My guys are used to eating freeze-dried chicken as snacks, so FD Wysong Archetype went over very well, very quickly.  Nobody has had any choking/throwing up problems.

I tried making some sauce out of the powder at the bottom, and put it on their wet to see if that might entice them to eat more canned.  Mooch did.  (Chami went to take a nap while I was letting the powder and water soak up together.)

From purely a moisture standpoint, I can't see why freeze-dried cat food would be any better than dry cat food. However, from a nutritional standpoint, I think it is loads better because the process of freeze drying helps to ensure preservation of the natural nutrients, enzymes, etc.

I have not tried S&C, but I recently began feeding Wysong's Archetype "non-thermally processed" food. I have 9 cats and this is the very first product that all 9 cats will eat -- and with great enthusiasm! Never seen anything like it! I use it as a top dressing to their canned food for added vitamins, minerals, enzymes and probiotics.

I, too, believe in feeding a primary diet of canned food to cats due to the moisture issue, especially since all 9 of my kitties are seniors.
