I SUSPECT this is an isolated case, and I SUSPECT that the feed store may have improperly stored the cans, but I felt I should let others know that my surviving cat is having trouble with a specific canned flavor of Felidae, and ask if anyone else has had the same problem.  He is fine with the Chicken & Rice, he likes it a lot.  But I bought a can of Chicken, Turkey, Lamb, & Fish and he turns his nose up at it, doesn't even want to be near it...and when I got him to eat it, he threw up, plus he's been drinking a lot of water again. I've emailed Canidae today, no reply yet, of course, and stuck the can back in the fridge in case they want it.  Fortunately I also have Prowl from the Honest Kitchen, and some sardines...and a couple more cans of the Chicken & Rice to tide us over until payday.

I did see a can with rust on the top in the store and brought it to the attention of the store, but the next time I went to the store the same can was back on the shelf, and the clerk acted like it wasn't terribly important when I told them again.  The store is 60 miles away, so driving there frequently isn't something I can do.

I think I'll be driving to Canada for cat food this payday, tho, since its a shorter drive and I might be able to find some Natura products to try.  Homemade and raw diets are out of the question for me, since I don't have a way to store a lot of meat.

I buy Felidae at Mud Bay.  Most kitties turn their nose up at that formula (which I use - don't like the Chicken/Rice formula).  My 14 yo took to it right away (tends to be a little more feral than some of the other Holistic Brands).  By mixing the Felidae (starting with little bits, then going 1/3 Felidae to 2/3 Innova)  the boy kitties are now eating Felidae on occasion.

As to your can - there is no problem at Mud Bay.

I incidentally opened a can in my previous batch of Felidae - and noticed it was more a Pate texture.  I called Evangers and Felidae - they confirmed a formulation change for cans with Best By Dates AFTER Nov. 2009.  They changed it from juicy, chunky to more pate.  The cats liked it better they said (and my cats confirmed this).

I went back to Mud Bay to exchange (as instructed by the folks at Canidae).  Apparently - the Felidae is flying off the shelves!!  They shook the older cans, you can hear the juice and innerds.  The newer cans - when you shake, you hear nothing.  The best buy dates are now 2010 (or something like that).

Sounds like:
  • You had an older batch (confirmed by the rust on the can).  I would go to another pet store.  You can also suggest to other pet stores and Feed Stores to stock up on this food - they are looking for alternates to Menu.
  • Some cats vomit when switching foods too fast (I thought Siberia was doing this - it was my 3 yo Jimmy - whom had been fed Gwainy Cwap all his life)
  • As to drinkin a lot of water - was this a case of melamine poisoning from recalled food?  Sometimes, kitties drink a lot of water.  Because this is a scary time, we are all hyper alert for kitty behavior.  If your cat is not previously diagnosed with ARF/CRF - then its really not anything to worry about.  Otherwise - they may need some bloodwork done again.

Moony, I used to consult with a pet nutritionist and she told me that alot of cats cannot or do not tolerate lamb well. Sorry, but I cannot remember why. Two of mine did not do well on a lamb based food. I assume that the can you fed was one that had not expired?

Laurie: The expiration is Aug 2009, so it wasn't expired.  I think it was improperly stored before being put in the shelves...and probably has sat there a while, too.  Thanks for the info about lamb, tho.

karvskitties: He was diagnosed with renal failure because of one of the previous foods he'd been on that killed my other cat - Natural Balance Reduced Calorie kibble. And excessive drinking was one of the symptoms.  I've been putting excess water in his foods since (making it rather soupy at times), but this was EXTRA water he was drinking beyond that the past couple of days.

I'm probably going to switch to a Natura food once I can find a place within driving distance that has it.  IF he likes it.

I just noticed this thread and thought to give some input.  I have been using Felidae Platinum (wet and dry) by themsleves or in mixture with my two cats' raw food (am still in the process of transitioning them from commercial to home made raw).  Anyway, my older cat likes the Felidae Platinum and the younger one likes the kibble. Had no problems with either.  Then I bought a few cans of Felidae Cats and Kittens.  Although it smelled and looked good, both cats refused to eat it after a couple of obligatory licks.  Perplexed, I actually tasted this Felidae variety and it had a slightly bitter taste!  No - I am not grossed out.  If I expect my cats to eat something, I should be able to take a taste of it at least.  So, I chucked out that opened can and plan to exchange these "Cats and Kittens" variety for the Platinum next time I go to the store.  I have had no problems whatever with the Platinum variety - wet or dry.

LOL, that is the Senior Formula.  I did a taste test too.  It was okay (but it was the pate looking one.

I recently ordered Felidae cans from Petfood Direct and they were all rusted.  Also, my cats refuse to eat the food now.  Can't help wondering.......

By the way, is Prowl from Honest Kitchen a good food?  I am trying to get my guys off the kibble addiction and I have one that would rather starve than eat canned.

Ive tried COUNTLESS numbers of times to feed my kitties prowl. All three refuse it everytime. Its the one thing they wont even go near. I wish they would. It looks like a good food to me. Maybe your kitties will like it. Every kitty is different!

So true.  Dogs are even harder (with the different breeds).

I did a separate topic on the cans from Evangers about the rust on them. I called the company and they steralize the cans at 240 degrees with well water for 80 minutes. Once the water evaporates it can leave rust marks as well water will do that if any of you live with it or have ever experienced it. Since the cans are so hot they do not handle them individually to wipe them off (now with all the recalls since they run 3 shifts to keep up with the demand for their food) the water also may leave droplets that have also evaporated. The cans are not contaminated in any way, shape or form. You can clean them off with some hot water with vinegar in it as this will remove rust and clean shower heads with no chemicals.
