Has anyone else had vomiting or refusals of December batches or Friskies canned food?  Or any other dates?

13 of our adult cats have been eating Friskies canned for over 6 months now as their main food.  Mostly use Turkey & Giblets Classic Pate in 13 ounce cans purchased from 3 different sources. Kittens and senior cat eat Fancy Feast Turkey Kitten Feast and Fancy Feast Turkey & Giblets Classic Pate.

Suddenly, we started having problems with 2 December lots produced on different days.  Cats are not free fed.  Two cats walked away from bowls on different days and then returned and ate food and vomited within 15 minutes.  Two other cats vomited within 15 minutes of eating. Remaining cats had no vomiting issues.   Two vomits did contain a single hairball, so that could be the reason for the vomit. The refusals are out of character for our cats. They are not fed dry except for rare occasions.

This is the first time we have noticed a problem.  In fact, back in October I posted on the Cat Food Experiences Friskies thread that we were still using this food.

These are the dates we had vomiting with.
Lots were 13 ounce cans.

Currently we are using a different December lot produced on day 0339 of 2010 without problems so far.

Yesterday, I contacted a friend who runs a TNR group as I know she regularly feeds Friskies Turkey & Giblets Classic Pate to her own house cats/20-25 cats.  I asked her if she had any problems with December batches of Turkey & Giblets.  This is what she said:

"I am using it still, but I did have some issues with the last batch in December. Vomitting and a couple of cats walked away from it. "

Punkin has not been enthusiastic about the Friskies lately, but it could just be his old age pickyness. He turned his nose up at Weruva yesterday also & ate it today. I only give it every 2-3 days, alternating with homemade & other brands of canned.

Missing my cat brothers and sister killed by PF

« Reply #2 on: January 19, 2011, 10:45:49 PM »

I purchased a can of it the big can I think its the 13 oz can and my cat did not want to eat it....she snubbed it....I rotate her food a lot and home cook so I just (like an idiot) added chicken and such to it to get her to eat it...which she did over the course of a few days . She did not throw up or anything but man I ought to know by now if an animal backs off food they are sick already ....or....going to be from the food. I am glad I feed her 2 meals a day of either homecooked chicken or BFF's canned foods and her 3rd moist meal is the one that varies......sometimes I buy 9-Lives.(she free feeds on 2 different dry foods too).....My point is she was exposed to just one can and I no longer have the can......though I know when I got it and the expiration date was 2012

If my girl backs off a food it is not because she is already sick in her case - she has a sense that something is not right w/the food and I leave it down for about 1/2 an hour and if it is still not touched in the garbage it goes. 9 times out of 10 the food within the next couple of weeks or months gets recalled or something is found wrong w/it so that makes me glad she knows to avoid food that could cause problems for her and me. Have tried other flavors of same brand and same thing happens. Try again maybe later down the road and same thing - refused, won't touch it.

Just Me,  I don't know if this is where this belongs, however I just found it in my email and thought it is important.  It makes me want to stop using the Friskies I've been feeding to my cats.  I have had some vomiting, but don't know which cat (s)  it is, and if 4 cats died all eating Friskies, that is alarming to me.

Concerning Reports about Friskies Cat FoodThe local news here in Tampa, FL reported on January 19, 2011 a heartbreaking story of a woman who believes Friskies Cat Food killed her cat.  The very next day I received several submissions of pet names to Vindication; four cats died and all were eating Friskies.

To see 4 more reports is very disturbing.

Kherget was feeding Friskies pouches.

Justme,  Thanks for the info about Kherget!   Yes, 4 more reports of deaths is downright scarey!!  I read the truth about..... every day, and never even noticed the "vindication" you say is on the right side!!  Must go and look.
I am returning my Friskies.  Always have been suspicious of the gravy foods since 2007 anyway.  But the prime filets is a couple cats favorite, so I dared to buy it again. Oh well.....

I have always been disturbed by the seemingly uncooked sections I found in the middle of the Friskies pate flavors. why does it all have to be so darned difficult, bad enough that it is so expensive to buy decent food, we shouldn't have to be scared out of our wits at the same time thinking we may be poisoning our little friends.  Gee, PAYING A LOT OF MONEY TO BE SCARED!!  What's wrong with this picture!!!   Sorry about venting, but I've been anxious about a lot of things lately.

Oh Kherget!  I am SOOOO sorry for your loss of your precious, young friend!  I can really empathize with your sorrow since I also have had some very painful losses in recent years, pets who had been my friends for 17 or 18 years, and some younger too.  It can be devastating, I know.   Here in Itchmo, we have all experienced such loss.
The only comfort is that you can be sure that she will never feel pain of any kind again, no one can ever harm her, she is safe now,  safe forever from all worldly suffering.  She is at rest and at peace.  Regardless of your religious beliefs,  you can be sure of that.
I personally believe that our precious, innocent little friends are once again safe in the arms of their creator.   They know all the answers now.

And you can be thankful that at the end she was well loved and cared for and belonged to a wonderful family.  Many poor animals can never experience that.
I hope you are able to determine the cause of her passing, and help prevent other deaths perhaps.   Bless you and I pray that your grief will ease.
