Herdin' Cats and 2 GSDs

What is everyone feeding their dogs, wet/dry/raw, how long have they been eating it, and what results are you seeing?  Breed and/or size of dog, age of dog?

Now that my cats are doing well, I need to find good food for my dogs.

Please, no bashing of products, I just want to see what everybody is happy with so I can look into various options.

My 2 German Shepherds (1 and 2-years-old) are currently eating TWO Ocean Blue, maybe 1-1/2 months now.   I don't know if this is the right food for them or not.  They have itchy skin this spring, not sure if it is allergic or not.  Previously they were on Eukanuba Low Residue and seemed to do well on it, as did my previous GS who was on it lifelong and lived to be 14, in good health.  I'm avoiding any brands that had recalls, obviously.

Please, no bashing.  I'd like to keep this on topic.

Thanks for any information you have.

There is another blog (off the petfoodlist), that has brands by name.

Since I can't get Sis off Beneful (I'll be calling her again) - and she has between 2 and 3 dogs (don't ask  Huh ) - can't speak from true experience.

Positive results reported in that forum (and working for my kitties) Eagle Pack Holistic, Orijen (both EU certified for export - so they have to be tested up to their standards) - and a few other brands.

I don't have the link for the forum (maybe you've seen it?)

AAAHHHH - found it in History:

Perhaps I misunderstood, but, you cannot mix raw with kibble

Absolutely correct. Grin

I think it has something to do with digestion, like the enzymes needed for one block out the other or something hinky like that. You should feed one or the other but not both. All the dog lists I am on agree.

I know many people who mix the raw and kibble, including myself.  (I'm not saying this is good.)  But, I can tell you the dogs are looking and doing great.  I need to do lots of research before I can comment any further.

We don't feed raw, tried it once and it created all kinds of territorial problems. I am just reporting back on what I have read. I am not sure why you aren't supposed to do it, BUT if your guys are doing well on it, that's great.

OK here is a web site that tell us why

http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm

"Kibble and raw food are digested differently, and should NEVER be fed together, in the same meal.  If you feed dry kibble at the same meal as the raw meat, you are increasing the amount of time the food is in the body, and increasing the possibility of illness from microbes. So, if you want to feed half & half, feed kibble one meal, raw the next."

What microbes they are talking about I have no idea? but again as long as your guys are doing ok on it, great.

KarvsKitties have your sis check out doggybling.com - that will get someone off Beneful in a hurry!!

I am afraid to make any recommendations since you never know what's going to pop up next.  Canidae and Timberwolf are being really secretive and there is a time I felt comfortable with them; but not any more.

So I am line with you, asking what do people feel is safe?

Canidae is not being secretive.  Now, there are only 2 ladies in the office, last time I called.  You just have to keep redialing.  I told them I knew the Canned was from Evangers, they were completely open.  They bag at Pied Piper.

JustMe I have a shepherd/siberian husky/collie or golden mix 2 1/2 on 7-10 and she eats Evangers canned and I was and still are using Karma dry as it is 95% organic made by Natura. Her coat is shiny, so soft, growing in thicker all the time, she smells great, no funny odor to her at all, great disposition, very playful, all over happy spirit. She's my Lil Angel alright! So glad I was using this when the recall started. Hope this will help you in finding the food for your dogs.

Cool.  Thanks so much.  I am feeding them a little bit of EVO when I run out of TWO.  I will try and find/order some Karma as nobody seems to have it in my area.  Your dog sounds beautiful!

karvskitties, Are you talking about Karma made by Natura or Evanger's?  Evanger's DOES make cat food.  I have a case, but haven't tried it yet.

JustMe your very welcome. I've cut back on things so I can afford to feed her as organic as we all know is not cheap. At Pet Supplies Plus they now carry an expanded variety of the Evangers (lower prices than the other pet store that also has Evangers) and that is where I found the Karma.

Karvskitties Evangers does make a canned cat food you might want to check out for your lil one.
