Came across this study done by University Of Mass regarding pet food's use of cranberries.  Lots of other info like who merged with who, who makes what foods. Doane Pet Foods stated in this study that it merged with Menu Foods in the year 2000--I don't recall this info ).  See study in pdf at:
(it is about 197 pages)

This University is not far from me.  Very interesting, I wonder why they prepared the study, for the Business Course?/

Their Vet School is in the Middle of Massachusetts, so I am just curiousl

From the Archives of the NY Times:

"In 2001, Menu bought the wet food operations of Doane Pet Care, a major contract producer of dry foods in the United States, for $15 million. Menu became a publicly held company the next year. "

More dots you might not have connected yet:

Tenn. -- Doane Pet Care Co. here, a division of the privately held Mars, Inc., yesterday recalled some of its dog food sold exclusively at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. because of concerns about possible salmonella contamination

Huh
Mars, Inc.

If you go towards the end of the report, say page 172 to the end, I get the impression the study was done to give the cranberry industry ideas on how to expand their business beyond people.  That is my take on it.  They talked to companies who use cranberries in pet food and interviewed some big companies who said they might be interested if there were studies proving the benefits of cranberries for pets.  It was sponsored by a Massachusetts cranberry organization. I found the summaries at the end of the report interesting, especially when they start talking about targeting baby boomers and baby boomers are spending the most money on pets.  "We got the power".  So, maybe those of us who are baby boomers have some leverage after all with the pet food industry.

Wow, Martha.  The one I find really weird is " Spectrum Brands Inc., formerly Rayovac, produces Nature's Miracle pet-care products and Dingo brand pet toys."  batteries and pet care.  huh?
