This week, I was rinsing out a can of Canidae Platinum for recycling and I noticed that the bottom of the can has places where the lining was missing, in the food no doubt.  My dog has also developed very loose diarhea.  I called the FDA and they have not returned my call.  I showed my vet the can and he said it shouldn't come off that easy.  Called Canidae and they said they would give me coupons for more cans but seemed unconcerned.  Now JAMA  is saying the lining of most cans (people's too), contain BPA.  Not happy about this.  Will not feed Canidae anymore and will look at other cans as well.  Would like to know if others have noticed this in any food cans.

Although it says that Simmons makes a lot of cans for the pet food industry, we have no idea who does the cans for Canidae.

Simmons has recently been cited by FDA-see link:

Canidae was being canned by Evanger's who has/had a similar problem:

If you don't hear from FDA soon, you might want to call again with this.

Hi, Robin --

I would file an official complaint with your FDA coordinator and insist on filing an actual complaint, here:

http://www.fda.gov/cvm/petfoods.htm
How to Report a Pet Food Complaint

To report complaints about pet food (and other animal feed), please contact your state FDA's Consumer Complaint Coordinator(s). Contact information can be found at the list of FDA's Consumer Complaint Coordinators . When reporting, please include as much information as possible, including the specific product name, lot numbers, veterinarian's report and diagnosis, etc.

Follow the link above to find out your FDA coordinator's phone number and tell them you want to file a complaint. The FDA does have to take such complaints, and this is a continuing issue for many. Glad to see someone who is willing to go the extra step, and really hope your dog is okay. Let us know.

Welcome to Itchmo, Robin!  I recall some of the Nutro food we had been feeding prior to the 2007 pet food recalls having lining that would scratch off too easily with a fork but I dont remember seeing big chunks missing like you described.  I hope your dog gets better very soon and I agree with the rest on trying to file a complaint with your FDA coordinator seeing how the PFC was so non-responsive to your concerns.

I am a guest searching out some answers to the problem of the can liner peeling off into the food for canidae.  I returned a can that looked like paint peeling from the inside of a paint can (it was the liner) to my local pet food store today.  The owner immediately called the sales rep who called me back.  He reported that the peeling liner was "human grade", that the contents of the can where cooked in the can and that is why the liner peels off into the food and it was not a problem.  It is a problem for me and I will not feed my dog food from cans that have liners that peel off!  Other thoughts?

Welcome Tomo

No one is sure at this point who cans the food for Canidae.
The can liners are plastic and human grade or not, I completely agree with you about feeding from a can that appears to have peeling paint in it.  Personally, I don't think dogs or humans should be eating plastic.

Can liners did cause a recall for various pet foods in 2006
Please check the following links and see if any may be helpful to you.
I certainly would contact the FDA and file a complaint following up with them if necessary

Welcome to Itchmo TomO. There is a lot of information posted on this forum that will give you an insight into the companies who do the canning for pet food companies. Let us know how you make out.
