I was looking at my Wellness cans that I was putting in to recycle and I noticed some scrapes on the inside of the can. I'm talking about the plastic looking coating inside that the food sits on. I checked all the empty cans for scratches and two of the last 10 had this. I am concerned this is plastic and got mixed in with the food when I spooned it out of the can.
Has anyone else noticed this?

I haven't noticed this with my Wellness cans ~ but I just dump the entire can upside down on a plate and then break it up with a fork.

I haven't noticed this either, and I do scoop it out with a fork.
I have the 3 oz cans, and this weekend pet-sat my friend's cats, who had the 5.5 oz cans.
What size were the cans you had problems with, ranger? I think different sizes may be canned in different plants, or have different can manufacturers. And what were the flavors and expiration dates, if you still have them?

I haven't seen that either yet. We use all 3 sizes, but mainly chicken, turkey, turkey & salmon, chicken & herring. You should definitely call Wellness and complain about this.
Of all the cans we have had so far, the 3 oz cans say Canada. The 5.5 oz and 12.5 ounce say USA.

Humm well one was a 3oz and the other 5.5oz. I just realized I didn't write this info on the labels. I am still keeping my labels with the amount eaten and the code and expiration dates so I will fish them back out and let you know. I just wasn't sure if it had happened before and I didn't notice but from now on I will wash the can and check it right away. And of course you are right I should contact Wellness and let them know. Thanks I know if I ask here someone will remind me what I should do, sometimes it is so overwhelming with the whole pet food thing common sense goes out the window (or the brain)

I seem to remember another post awhile back about can coatings scratching off, but I don't think it was Wellness that was mentioned. I have been trying to find the post, but have not been successful so far. Does anyone else remember?

I was just trying to edit my post because I saw a thread on page 2. Iit was not Wellness but do not like the idea of a new problem with pet food. Plus now I really have to check my records since Socks was not feeling well for a few days. Trying very hard not to get upset now.

I hope Socks is okay, too. I think we are talking about different manufacturers here. Therese lists Canidae/Felidae as being canned by Evangers and Simmons, while I am assuming Wellness is still canned by Menu. http://www.thepetfoodlist.com/petfoods_pg1.htm

Ok so I pulled out the cans and 5 out of 6 cans had scratches every one except for a 5.5 oz Newmans. I had three more cans drying and they all had scratches some of them just one, some tiny one but I never would have noticed if I had not looked for them under a bright light. So all the scratched cans were Wellness except for one of the new Newmans Organic. I started writing down the numbers but what to do it seems like they are all scratched. I never use anything but a spoon to scoop out the food. Does anyone know what the can lining is made of? Most of the scratches are small but I don't want to feed plastic can liners to my cats.

I'm going to have to look more closely at my cans. I also use a spoon. Thanks for bringing this up Judy.

Maybe 1 more caution needs to be added to mealtimes, empty the whole can out so the lining can be checked before using the food.Considering everything else we are checking, maybe not so weird an idea.

This is an interesting subject because I had always wondered what that lining is too....is it plastic and if so, does that account for any of the positive melamine tests?

Well I just got off the phone with Wellness, the person Beverly said the lining are a human grade material "so the food doesn't touch the can". I am not sure exactly what that means? But I did ask if it was plastic and she said no no plastic. I hope that is true. She wants me to send a can with the same numbers back to them. I did say all the cans were like that and that I only used a spoon. No one there has heard of this. Last night when I opened a can (different brand) I tried to shake the food out but I couldn't get it out without using a spoon.
