You might want to save a couple of the unopened cans from the lot with the hulls. Just a thought.
Sorry to hear about your mom and your dog. {{hugs}}

Thanks for the good thoughts. As if life could not get any more challenging, on Sunday our german shepherd came out of remission. She was dx with lymphoma in Nov, 2006 and we did the WM chemo protocol thru April 19, 2007. We celebrated her 1 year after chemo anniversary on Saturday and on Sunday her lymph nodes were huge. She's only 6 1/2 years old and looks and feels great. We bit the bullet and started chemo again on Monday. She's not going to beat this cancer, but maybe can have a bit longer here with us. As long as her quality of life is good, I just felt we didn't have any other choice. So...this dang cat food issue has been put on the back burner at my house. Has anyone gotten any updates from Blue Seal? Are they just throwing up their hands and hoping we're the only few who contact them? Ray did not respond to my 2nd call so I'm assuming they have no clue what it is, aren't testing it for toxins and apparently don't give a damn as long as the food is selling to those that don't know it contains grain parts? BTW, Monsta is eating Innova EVO with gusto. I brought home some of their older formulas (in the gold label cans) and one of the new formulas (in the purple label can) and he reluctently ate the older formula. When I opened the purple can, he dove in and ate 1 1/2 cans that day so I bought a case. And Petsmart took back all 78 cans of By Nature. Sharon in VA

Sharon, I am so sorry to learn of your dogs bout with cancer. Praying that they are able to attack it successfully and achieve remission once again. I never heard back from Ray either. I sure would of liked to know what the hulls were and how they got into the food. I would think they would have to know what type of hulls they were.

I spoke with Ray (and, for the record, I called the toll free number and he answered, I didn't even have to wait for a return call) and he said that they were not testing to find out what type of hulls they were but they did know it was some type of grain. I asked him if they were testing for contaminents and he said, always.
I also asked if they were going to move their manufacturing from Evangers and he would not be included in those discussions if they were taking place, so he does not know either way.
I asked what they going to do and he said that the grains have already been removed from the processing and he is going to try and get me a lot number or expiration date of the food that does not include grains.
He is as helpful as he can be but he is like most other customer service oriented people and they are typically not the decision makers.

Sharon- I am sorry to hear your gsd has relapsed. Hoping the treatment will give you some good quality time with her. On the hulls in the food, it seems to be a problem of qc with all the better foods trying to meet increased demand. I had a problem with Evangers dry dog, the test results for excess copper are on Don's site www.pfpsa.org .There have been problems with Natura,Wellness, Natures Variety & others recently. It would be nice if we could just go to the store & buy food[ human or pet] without doing searches online first.

Thanks, our GSD is tolerating chemo well. She literally breezed through it the last time so we are hoping for the same this go around.
Thanks for the link to the PFPSA - I had no clue about that site and will probably spend the rest of today on line reading. What other sites am I missing?
I cook for my dogs (well three of them, the lymphoma patient is on Innova EVO and about a bizillion supplements). I use Dr. Pitcarin's recipes, sort-of, I feel they are a little heavy on grains so I cut that back and add purreed veggies. I'm seriously considering cooking for the cats, but their nutritional requirements are so exacting that I worry about meeting them.

SharonD- I do the same thing with Pitcairns recipes. I cook for the cat also. It's not that hard, just make sure it is almost all meat .I use organs or fish alternately for the taurine & vitamins with mostly turkey & pork.I do have a meat market which sells their meat trim, including rabbit & venison etc, they all get that too. Just remember to recalculate the phosp/calcium ratio when adding the extra meat.

Just started feeding my cats this (I have one picky eater that really seems to love it). First few cans of various flavors were fine.
This morning I noticed that the cats had not eaten what was on their plate, which was peculiar, since they'd chowed down the last can I'd given them. Having read about the problem with the "hulls" here, I decided to inspect the food. I found a large piece of turkey skin, what appeared to be a small bone fragment, and several of the brown "hulls". I rinsed out a heaping teaspoon of food in a sieve until the food was gone, and found several hulls, some bone fragments, and some small blobs of white rubbery stuff left behind.
I emailed Blue Seal earlier today (with photos) and am waiting for a response.
The lot number on my can of Turkey and Turkey Liver is: 13 80E 15 BL 4 Best by Jan 2011
It was purchased in Ohio.

Update: I contacted the company (Blue Seal) and was told by customer service that "Some research has revealed that the organic guar gum added to these foods is derived from guar (cluster) beans and it is thought that some guar bean husks have inadvertently been included in the guar gum." In a followup email from their marketing services, I was told, "We did have some other issues with 'hulls' in the food but that has been resolved. There was no threat to pet health due to this." I was advised that they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and to return the cans to the store(s) where I bought them (which I did, since my cats wouldn't eat the can that had a lot of husks in it).
Not entirely sure when this problem was resolved. The cans I had had expiration dates of January 2011. I picked up some new cans with expiration dates of April and May 2011. The one with the April date still had some husks in it (though not as many). The one with the May date looked good, with no husks at all. My cats wolfed both of those cans down. (They really seem to like this food when its not full of husks.)

Thanks for the update, a2dox! Good to know what the problem, and that they got back to you on it. Too bad they didn't say what the first round of hulls was from.
You would think if they were using high quality guar gum it would be hull-free. I think most guar gum comes from India, so getting the best quality would be important. I hope they aren't cutting costs but getting second grade stuff.
The bones & skin sound just like Evanger produced food - are they still canning their food for them?

Sandi didn't know Nature Organics was canned by Evangers. Wow, would this food have been exposed to higher than normal copper levels if done on the same production line at Evangers?

JJ, that was for the Blue Seal, Brand Farms Naturals 95% meat canned cat foods. That was made by Evangers at least that is what Blue Seal told me back in April of this year when I checked. I dont know if this By Nature Organics food is the same thing? I do know I had opened a can of the Brandon Farms Naturals back then and it also had some hulls in it. Sophers didnt like it anyhow.

Sandi K - I didn't hear about the problem with the Blue Seal 95% meat canned food. Is there a link on here about it?

Sorry should have read the post right below before posing that question. But since it is Blue Seal would that food contain more copper than normal or not? On previous posts on here I had seen that they clean the lines before running another brand/customer food after finishing a different one. Now wonder how true that might be and how often the production line is cleaned between different brands of food for different clients?
