I was just thinking about that Peg, if they can't read labels, then they probably aren't going to know if guar gum powder (or anything else) is not supposed to have excess hulls in it.

Yuck, I didn't know rice hulls were that "extensive"!  Felidae & Canidae do have rice in them & are canned there.

maybe they are guar bean husks?  I saw this picture from a merchant in India (guar is native to India).  Does this look familar?

To me, looks a little yellow by comparison to what 5cats photographed.  Although, maybe the cooking process lightens the color.................

Really bugs me "that the contamination is so widespread" and they don't seem to give a rat's behind   Angry

Thought that this food was grain free that the pics are from? Since this is canned by Evangers would that have anything to do with my dog refusing to eat the Evangers after a year eating it with no problems? She just up and refused on the premium Evangers chicken, chicken casserole and then the turkey. Since they hired so many people to keep up did they add more to stretch the food batches (like these hulls) to other foods and possibly theirs too to be able to make more to not slow production down to wait for quality ingredients? So glad I pay attention to the my fur daughter - if she won't eat it I return what I have left and use an alternate. Now using wellness grain free and Organix (hate to use it but the brown rice is organic in the Organix) but need supplement to go along with the home cookied.....Sorry if off topic on that but thought it might relate to these problems in the recent food problem with the hulls.

I just finished conducting my own little "experiment" with the Felidae Platinum I have here... I passed the cat food through a cloth sieve... and found similar looking "flakes"... I tried to get pictures but my camera is not focusing well on such tiny objects.  But from what I can see, they look like insoluble flakes that appear very similar to the "flakes" pictured by 5Cat... Felidae Platinum is supposed to contain brown rice. I must say that I noticed that the newer cans of Felidae that I bought had light brown particles distributed through the food and I thought these may be liver... the light brown particles are actually these "flakes."  The Felidae I used to get months ago were darker in overall appearance and did not have these light brown particles.

Felidae is canned by Evangers.  My cats have been OK though... no barfing.

Seems that Guar gum sourced from India has been shown to contain high levels of dioxin. http://in.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idINIndia-32465120080313

What about products that contain titanium dioxide? Is this also toxic? Its in majority of pills/supplements/vitamins from what I've read on what I have...

As I had previously posted in late March, I had purcahsed a can of this food that had the same lot number and expiration date as one of those posted by 5cat. I called the company soon after and left a message pertaining to the questionable items in the food. I arrived home one day last week to find a message left by a man from By Nature on my answering machine. He stated that there were indeed grain hulls in the food and advised me to return it to the store I had purchased it from for a refund. He then asked if I would email him with the numbers from the can. Well I did not email, I proceeded to call the company back and left him another message asking to please return my call. I was hoping to obtain more info. He has not returned my call. Not sure if the store I purchased it from still has the cans with the same numbers on the shelf, but I plan on checking it out.

Add Chicken and Mackeral, Lot 24 70E 13 BM 7, Best By December 2010.   I just bought 4 cases and am going to return them tomorrow.  I've spoken with Ray at Blue Seal about another issue I had almost a year ago and plan to speak with him about this next week.  I rinsed about 2 tbl of this food thru a seive and ended up with at least 1 tsp of brown hulls.  No wonder my kitty has not been as enthusiastic about eating his food.

It's the only food he's ever eaten and I don't even know what other foods I should try.  Any suggestions?I'm done with By Nature.

Welcome SharonD.  Good luck in your attempt to actually speak to someone at By Nature. All calls, at least the few times I had called, go to an answering machine. Although about a week later Ray did leave me a message on mine. As I had posted earlier on this thread, I have still not received a response to my second call. You might like to check out the Cat Food Experiences thread and/or the thread on How to Choose A Cat Food. Please let us know any info you get from By Nature.

Thanks everyone for this information.  I saw it today and posted it on the IBD forum I help moderate.  I knew Sharon fed her cats this food and had really liked it in the past. So, too bad since it helped her cats.

In addition to leaving a message on extension 111 (since Customer Service extension 112's mailbox was full) I have sent the following email:

 ----- Original Message -----
  From: David and Sharon Daussin
  To: info@bynaturepetfoods.com
  Sent: Saturday, April 12, 2008 9:32 PM
  Subject: Chicken and Mackeral

I found out tonight (thru the Yahoo felineibd list/itchmo) that there are
some type of "hulls" in this food along with other canned foods.  I checked
for myself and about 2 tbl of food, stirred in a seive as water ran through
it, left about 1 tsp of small brown hulls. As I think back, my cat stopped
readily eating his food about 3 weeks ago but I didn't think it was anything
other than a change in lot since I had opened a new case.

I also understand that you do not know what these hulls are.  I hope that
you have some idea of how upsetting this is, particularily after the Menu
Foods (I know, Evangers manufactures your food) snafu of last year.

I want to know what these are, where they are sourced from and pray that
they are nothing that can possibly harm my cat.  I truly thought I was
purchasing a quality product that I could trust and have several cases here
that I plan on returning.  BTW, the lot number is 24 70E13BM 7.

Again, I hope you have some idea of how upsetting this is, not that that
will change anything.  I think the worst part of this (besides the worry of
what this may have done to my cat) is apparently very few, if any,
manufacturers of pet food are trustworthy.

Ray called today and left a message that I should be able to return the 4 cases of Chicken and Mackeral to Petsmart without any problems since their food is guaranteed.  Lucky me, I double checked and I have 6 cases and 6 cans to return.  I'm sure the local Petsmart won't be happy but hopefully they will give me my $$$ back without too much fuss.  He said if I have any problems to call him back.

He also verified that there are indeed grain hulls in the food which is supposed to be grain free.  He also stated that they do not know who put the grain in the food.

I called him back and left a message that I wanted to know what the hulls were and were they testing the food for any contaminents that may be harmful to my kitty.   I'll post the response I get to those questions as soon as I have time, it's been a crazy week with my precious sheltie being dx with avascular necrosis (at 8 years old) and my mom being admitted to the hospital this morning with a very serious infection that has a 25% mortality rate.

Ray seems very nice and helpful which is more than other companies have done in the past.
