Black chunks in California Natural Chicken/Brown Rice dry

I opened a new bag dated 05/03/08 to have embedded black chunks in some pieces of kibble. Some of the pieces are big enough to pull out with my fingernail. Shocked

Has anyone seen this in CN cat food? I know it's turned up in Innova dry dog food.

I called Natura to ask about what it might be and was told it might be flax seed, which I said it really didn't look like so then was told it might be vitamin premix. She asked if I would like the specimen tested and I said yes. She is sending me the information to submit a 2 cup sample for testing.

I guess I'm switching to Wellness tomorrow.

Yes I have seen them in my CN also. I bought a new big bag a few weeks ago, Exp. May 18, 2008. I have the same big black chunks. I immediately stopped feeding it. They are now on Kumpikat and Wellness.

Not five minutes before reading this post, I started a thread in the News forum about this exact thing. Seems we are all coming to the same conclusion at the same time.

Thanks for the info, I m just finishing up my first and maybe last bag of Cal. Nat. chicken!!! My westie doesnt need whatever the black stuff described by many other Cal. Nat. feeders!!! I do homecook but add kibble as well. Yikes.. it never ends! Mia2

My cat was eating California Natural. I just opened my second bag to check . I dug down to the middle of the bag and brought the food up. Sure enough I see little black chunks and white hair!! Not all had white hair just some. I used a magnifying glass. Now I am so grossed out!! No way would I feed this to my cat. Bye Bye Natura, I will stay with Eagle Pack.
The date was 04/04/08
