I was very disappointed to find out that Eagle Pack is now owned by Berwind...thank goodness for pet forums.  I have been an avid Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken Meal and Rice user for 2 years.  My two Maine Coon boys thrive on this food.  I contacted Eagle Pack regarding this issue, since now I am very hesitant in continuing to use this brand.  This is the response I received (within 2 hours) from the nurtitionist of Eagle Pack.

Eagle Pack prided themselves in a family owned and operated company.  The ingredients were top notch, but since it has been bought out I fear the quality of the food is about to suffer.  Unfortunate since it has been a great product....the did have a good reputation.

This goes back to our Elmers discussion regarding Wellness, moved to here:

http://itchmoforums.com/your-problems-with-pet-food/wellness-canned-t5878.0.html

Unfortunately this seems to be happening more & more, both in the PFI and business world in general - big conglomerates buying out the small guys.  Then the changes start.  How can we make this line more profitable, let's cut corners, let's make it more competitive while riding on the good name these people worked hard to create.  Then the decline in quality starts till the product isn't worth buying anymore.

Unfortunately with pet food, the pets suffer in all this.  Let's hope that won't happen here, but how can they insist on keeping the product line highest quality if told to up the profit margin by the new parent comany?  These mergers, buy-outs, sell outs happen because original owners want to retire and enjoy life, because the company is struggling in today's market, or because a big co. wants in on a hot product.

At least with all the input here and other forums, we can get news of these changes so we can keep close track of product quality and problems.

That is my concern for sure.  During the recalls I did major research before switching brands.  The health and wellness of my pets are at stake.  I have been happy with the results of Eagle Pack, but will be very cautious from now on.  I have already noticed a change in the kibble size..it is a little larger.  That is a positive change for me since I have Maine Coons and they do have big mouths!!  Had I know this earlier I would have saved the ingredients list from the bag and checked for changes.  Perhaps it is time to do some research into other brands and switch over before my pets become sick.  Perhaps Orajen might be worth looking into??

I'm unclear when Eagle Pack was last a family owned business, but in the other thread there is a link to this page http://www.spcap.com/private-equity-case-studies/index.php?case-study=Eagle+Pack+Pet+Foods which that page is dated 9-04 and mentions "transition from a family-run business".  So perhaps it's a case of one corp buying out another?

It does sound like it has been bought out twice in the last few years.  When you look at Berwind's companies, Eagle Pack looks like an odd choice to add to the portfolio.  They seem to mostly be involved in chemicals, mining and timber, and pharma products.  The fact they bought it in 07 suggests trying to capitalize on the recall and move to safer pet foods.

Not sure if this helps any but a little history on eagle pack  Joe Cocquyt   " returned from Indianapolis in 1971, to work for the family business, Animal By-Products, in New Carlisle, a parent company of Eagle Products in Mishawaka. Joe, along with his brother, Jim, took a small company making dry dog and cat food and turned it into a major manufacturer of super premium pet food."
From another article I read but cannot access anymore (from newspaper article that is archived )Joe Cocquyt was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003 or 2004 same  time period as eagle sold to swander  then in 2007 it was acquired by Berwind. Joe Cocquyt died in 2008

                               http://www.hahnfuneralhomes.com/show.php?id=326
                                          kathy
towards the bottom of article above prostate cancer turned into bone cancer but he worked at company up to the last few weeks of his life.

Edit to add  The last i knew family members were still at eagle pack, this may have already have been in the works before the above happenings (I do not know) . Food is still made in Indiana, so pretty much it comes down to the ordering  and suppliers (this was mentioned about another food somewhere else I cant remember which thread and who, sorry )
Not one single food is going to work for every animal ,so if one does work ....... and if not another may or rotating may work for a particular animal or home made  or raw.  I guess which ever food or combo works is best for the animal, just my opinion
