I would also think the same would hold true for the probiotics. Too bad the article did not elaborate on more items that are frequently added to pet food.

Most premiums NOT all the probiotics are freeze dried or added to the kibble after cooking to ensure they are still viable .... the glucosimine / chondrotin thing is 50/50 as one is actually NOT needed and neither is in a bio avail state... just ask and I will try to elaborate.. MY head is suddenly killing me darn weather

I am looking for a new dry food for my dog who got sick on Nutro.  I went to Pet Food List and noticed 4 Health Dog Food only available at Mt. People's Warehouse (now United Natural Foods - my son works there, coincidentally).  It is manufactured in their own kitchen and is not made for any private labels.  They use their own products - no Menu Foods, China, etc.  Has anyone tried this or does anyone know anything about it? I'm going to get my son's catalog and check it out but if I can get some info. from someone who has tried it or at least heard of it  first, that would be great!

OK. No takers on 4 Health Dog Food.  My son brought me a new catalog and it's not listed in there.  Maybe it's no longer available.

How about Halo? I've tried to find it on other Itchmo forums, but not much info. available.  Right now I am mixing in some Calif. Naturals Chicken and Rice kibble with the home cooked rice, chicken and once in a while a little cottage cheese.  She has tolerated this mixture the past couple of days but I don't know if I want to keep it up or not. I'll see how she does.So far, no more bloody stool or vomiting! She does love her kibble and I'm thinking of feeding her mainly kibble with some home cooked added to it occasionally. I like the sounds of Halo, but of course they all sound good when they are promoting their own products.  There is a full page add in the new catalog, United Natural Foods (a certified organic distributor ).  They list all of the bad things that are not in their food i.e. BHA, BHT, MSG, propyl gallate, etc.,  and say they they don't use anything artifical, rendered meats or meals, no wheat  soy, corn or gluten.  But, as we all know, we can't always trust the PFC to tell us the truth.

Unfortunately, it seems her digestive system was harmed more than I thought by Nutro.

luvmydog - just saw your posts here.  I couldn't find anything on the 4 Health Dog Food, so maybe they did quit making it.  It's so hard to recommend foods, what with different dogs tolerating different foods, and something new coming up each day.

I'm feeding my big dogs Pinnacle Trout & Sweet Potato dry food right now (not really wanting to, but the cats opened the emergency bag of dry I keep around so I have to use it now that it's opened).  My sister is feeding her dogs Pinnacle Duck & Potato.  Both sets of dogs seem to be doing OK on both formulas.  For my dogs, I also feed some commercial raw, Wellness canned, and home cooked meals.

I think some people here are feeding Wellness Core and having fairly good results.  Not sure about other brands, so will let them pitch in on recommendations.

All of my recommendations come with the warning that what is edible this week, may not be next week!  Good luck on finding a food that works for your dog.

luvmydog another dry you might want to check on would be the Orijen. I know its been listed on here as having bones from the fish in it but you would have to buy a small bag and check it for yourself. This is first dry I've tried since the recalls started and I was thru with the dry food. Have bought 4 bags now and found nothing in the bag but the kibble. Also use Organix canned, Wellness grain free, and Newman's Organics (turkey/brown rice one). Hope this helps in your search for a quality food to feed.

Been awhile since anything has been posted on this thread so I thought I would add an article I recently found on Dogaware.com. This article addresses commercial, homemade and raw diets. It also contains recipes and there is also a section regarding "Adding Fresh Foods To A Commercial Diet". It has detailed info regarding supplements including some recommended for those with allergies. Very interesting read with links and telephone numbers listed for most companies mentioned.   http://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html

Thx Laurie - that is a great link. Lots of info on there and it leads you to farms in your area to find completly grass fed beef and real free range chicken. Found a farm in my area that I plan on ordering grass fed beef from (the milk from grass fed cows at Whole Foods is delish) so the meat will be also, and chickens, butter, the cream is so rich and will be wonderful in coffee. This place has a deal with the farm that raises the grass-fed and you place the order and then drive to this farm between 4-7 pm on a thursday to pick up your order. Not bad at all. Thanks again!
