since this is a different issue from the '07 food recalls.

Cans of some brands have a shelf life of 3 yrs.  If this is correct for these particular cans, they were produced in January, 2007.

Some of us had similar symptoms in our cats in 2006 and 2007 after feeding FF EM.

Oh no, if that is true, there would not be much hope to re-coup the $$$ spent - too many other claims. BUT that would PROVE Purina was not so innocent after all!

I think that the shelf life on the Fancy Feast may be 2 years.  I have been feeding Fancy Feast for a number of years, and always look at the dates.  As new stock comes in, I find that the Best By dates pretty consistently are about 2 months short of being 2 years in the future.  For example, what I am buying now, April 2008, have Best By dates of Feb. 2010.  In March, I was buying cans with dates of Jan. 2010, etc. on back.

kaffe -
Potassium would have had to get into the blood stream in order to have any adverse effects and it would then have shown in the blood tests as being elevated.

Meowsalot, please keep us posted on what you decide to do about food testing, necropsy, etc.  Our hearts go out to you during your difficult sad time.

The swift onset after eating sounds like a pesticide-type reaction to me.  I am no expert, but the neurological symptoms suggest that to me.

I woke up yesterday to find one of my cats (Jellie) on the floor with her tongue sticking out and her eyes behind her head not responding to anything I was doing to her. We rushed to the ER , the doctor said theres a possibility she had a seizure but we won't know anything until the bloodwork comes back.

Soooo, we are heading home and she seems to be getting better awake and aware of her surroundings. She was extremly hungry so I fed her some wet food (fancy feast) Of course the other kittens want some too so I put out enough for everyone, 5 minutes later both Jellie and Peanut are throwing up and immediatly went into a lethargic state. Not moving, tongue out exc..

Its day 3. Peanut is feeling better, chasing invisible things like she always does, but Jellie is still extremly sick falling through my hands as I carry her and shes not eating anything at all. I'm guessing she ate alot more of the food then the other kittens.

I called Purina and they are saying that this is the first complaint they have gotten about the food. I know thats bull poop.

How can I get her to start eating again? What should I start with??

Sincerly,

A scared mommie

Meowsalot,  I was thinking this morning that you had said you had put out enough FF for all the kitties and I think you said you have 4 altogether?  So did the other 2 not get sick at all after eating the Fancy Feast?  Its strange why 2 would get sick and 2 would be OK or maybe I have something mixed up?  I keep thinking maybe there is something those 2 got into, like a plant or some cleaning solution or something outside?  Hope you are doing OK today.  Did you decide yet if you are going to get the food tested or have a necrospy done?

Math isn't my thing, but I gather the liver and chicken I have with Sept 2008 expire dates goes back to Sept 2006 or a few months earlier? (Usually I go for later dates but I was in a hurry that day and didn't check.)

And the others with expire dates of Oct and Dec 2009 would go back to late 2007 if the shelf life is two years.

Not feeling very confident, if I try these at all it will be slowly with tiny amounts.

Meowsalot, I am so sorry you lost your sweet young kitty and I'm hoping your others are OK.

catwoods-
I know that there are no guarantees, but I used the Fancy Feast through all those dates you mentioned without a problem.  In fact, before the recalls, I was using one particular flavor that DID have gluten, but stopped that one after the recalls.  All others I have used are the non-gluten and have had no problems.  I was using Dec. 2009 dates in Feb. of this year without problem, and would have used the Oct. 2009 ones probably in Dec. 2007.  And, LATE 2007 is well past the recall dates if that is when it was manufactured.  The Liver and Chicken doesn't have any gluten anyway.  As I said, no guarantees, but that is my experience if it helps.

Thanks, Mandycat, and Jenny, for your earlier post, that's all very helpful to know. I have a total of four flavors with no gluten, picked from the list of non-gluten varieties posted elsewhere.

I'm so sorry about your kitty Jelly Meowsalot.  I stopped feeding FF some time ago because I had some that looked raw in the middle of the can and I found a foreign object and my cat threw up blood and had blood in her stool.

I hope your other kitties are ok, that is a terrible thing to happen and I would pursue it since the vet agrees it was food related.

Butter came running when i opened the can but he just came for a sniff then left. kitty was meowing at my feet for some but never jumped on the counter because the kittens were there. peanut isnt a big wet food eater but she saw her sister eat some so she poked her head in the bowl with her , I dont have any plants at all, and like i said before my cabinets are childproof and they never go outside.

Peanut is walking around and chasing stuff but still feels drunk in my hands.
My husband just pointed out that her bottom was wet and he looked at the spot by the window were she was sitting and it shows that she pee'ed herself....I Cant afford another ER visit
Could this be a UTI?Huh
