I woke up yesterday to find one of my cats (Jellie) on the floor with her tongue sticking out and her eyes behind her head not responding to anything I was doing to her. We rushed to the ER , the doctor said theres a possibility she had a seizure but we won't know anything until the bloodwork comes back.
Soooo, we are heading home and she seems to be getting better awake and aware of her surroundings. She was extremly hungry so I fed her some wet food (fancy feast) Of course the other kittens want some too so I put out enough for everyone, 5 minutes later both Jellie and Peanut are throwing up and immediatly went into a lethargic state. Not moving, tongue out exc..
Its day 3. Peanut is feeling better, chasing invisible things like she always does, but Jellie is still extremly sick falling through my hands as I carry her and shes not eating anything at all. I'm guessing she ate alot more of the food then the other kittens.
I called Purina and they are saying that this is the first complaint they have gotten about the food. I know thats bull poop.
How can I get her to start eating again? What should I start with??
Sincerly,
A scared mommie

Meowsalot, does the vet know Jellie is still sick? If you havent I would notify the vet right away that she is still very sick. Also, we feed Fancy Feast, can you let us know the flavor, batch and lot number of what you were feeding? Also of course dont feed anymore of that kind just in case and do you have extra cans of the same batch lot to get tested if needed?
As far as getting her to eat, if she is really sick that might be hard to do, first make sure the vet knows she is very sick. Otherwise when we had sick kitties, we would do boiled chicken, Beechnut baby food, etc. Sometimes slightly warming the food can help attract them. If she vomited alot she might be dehydrated, maybe putting cups and bowls of water around the house in various spots might help attract her to drink, it did help us doing that with one cat we had before.
Please let us know what the vet says, I hope they can figure out what happened. This is very scarey! Is there anything new in the house Jellie could be getting into, a plant, antifreeze, anything at all you can think of? It sounds to me if Jellie is slipping thru your hands that she needs vet attention.

Sorry about your kitties. I'm a little confused. Did Jellie first get sick yesterday or 3 days ago? Is the blood work back yet? If your kitty is still this sick, she should be at the vet's under treatment, in my opinion. At the very least the vet could put her on some IV fluids. Can they put a rush on the blood work? 3 days with no answer is a long time for basic blood work. Did you tell your vet that both kitties got sick with similar symptoms? Which exact flavor do you suspect made them sick? Expiration dates on cans? Something just doesn't sound right here. Maybe I am misunderstanding your post.

Sorry to hear about your kitties being ill! Is the food you suspect the regular Fancy Feast or the Elegant Medleys (the kind that comes in the colored cans--red or blue or green)?

I have to add that I did just get through throwing out a whole batch of Fancy Feast Liver and Chicken flavor that for some reason Sophers would turn her nose up at. I have learned to listen to my cat now, if I had only listened to KiKi about her food. But I dont know if its related at all or not, I doubt it. The best by date on the bottom was March 2010 and the color looked darker than normal. I dont know if anything was wrong with the food but Sophers wouldnt touch that lot but would eat the same flavor, different best by date of Dec 2009 right afterwards.
But anyway, it really sounds like Jellie needs to be getting vet attention. Please keep us posted.

Sorry, I didnt correct it i copied and pasted from another post i have done yesterday, I woke up monday and found her there. I called the doctor and he said all the bloodwork came back normal. Told him that my other cat got sick along with her right after she ate the food and he said not to give it to them, of coarse i dont plan on it.
my husband fed them Ocean whitefish with tuna the night before, and then when i got home from the hospital i gave them the same flavor 5 minutes after they both barfed and passed out, thats how i know its the food I can have more info about the products once I get home

Did you talk to the DR today? Did you tell the Dr today that Jellie is still ill and and what did the Dr say? Is Jellie able to walk at all, what are her symptoms today?

Meowsalot, I'm sending prayers and purrs for the recovery of your kitties. I'm very interested in what you and others find out about this as I have recently purchased some FF from the gluten free list to try with my cats. I have two cans of "Tender Liver and Chicken Feast" with the Best By date of September 2008. I have not fed any of these yet, although in the past, before the recall, I fed FF with no problems.
And please also keep us posted on how your cats are doing, Meowsalot. (That's a very clever username).

Hi catwood - I've been feeding my Wilson Fancy Feast Tender Liver & Chicken Feast since December 16 when he got sick on Wellness. He had done fine on it. I had him just recently switched to all EVO 95 % venison for a couple weeks and then he rebelled so he is back on the Fancy Feast. The TL&C feast he is eating now is from February 2010. I have not been watching the date codes very closely on the FF but I know they change frequently. I will have to find another food for him, though, as I think he has poultry allergies. He had sores at the corners of his mouth that are pretty much healed from the EVO and I'm afraid they will come back on the FF.
Meowsalot - I'm so sorry about your sick kitties. Can you tell us any more information? I.e. the exact name on the can of food - Fancy Feast has so many that sound alike. The date code from the bottom of the can? Was the can dented at all? Anything unusual about the food or can? Have you fed that flavor before? Have they had that much seafood before? I.e. wonder if they had an allergic reaction of some sort? What did the vet test with bloodwork - I assume a blood chemistry panel, CBC, and urinalysis? And you say everything was normal? I would think if it was poison it would show in her blood work?
How is Jellie doing now? Is she moving around ok? If she stays lethargic, make sure you get her back to the vet. She may need fluids, additional tests, etc. Hopefully she is feeling better soon!!
Jenny

oh no no no no.... freak out!... your poor kitties! There is something in that FF can - either a foreign contaminant or an overdose of one of the supplements... what can cause a cat to pass out? Zinc, iron? selenium? we need to get answers!
... and I just gave a 1/2 tsp spread of FF Turkey/Gib over the cat's raw today --- so far, they are OK... no barfing...
