I'm very happy with my Roomba.  They do make one with a different brush for pet hair, but I'm amazed at how much the regular one picks up.  It doesn't do a good job along the baseboards so I have to do that with the regular vacuum but that's fine because I use the Roomba more often than I would have time to vaccum myself.  Now if I could just program it to vacuum the couch....

We thought of getting a Roomba but figured its lifespan here wouldn't justify the price. The dogs probably would kill it  in a day or so. $300 out the window.

We remodeled and had to get new carpet last year which was thicker than the old. It destroyed my Kenmore which had been wonderful (5 or 6 years old) so I finally bought a Bissell Healthy Home.  It handles the thicker carpet really well and seems to get all the cat and dog hair too.  I think it's a great vacuum, but heavier and louder than the Kenmore Whisper Quiet?(don't remember exact name.)  We have one small dog and one big cat.

I swear by the yellow Dyson.  I have 4 cats and a long-haired daughter, and dark suede-textured furniture (am I crazy or what?)  I've had the Dyson for about 3 years, and I've never seen anything work as well.  I have both carpets and hard floors, and it's great on both.  I even vacuum the dry bathtub and shower using the attachment; this has cut down greatly on clogged drains.  It's very easy to empty and doesn't use disposable bags that add to landfills.  We have people with allergies and a slightly asthmatic cat, and they have been better off since I got the Dyson.  It has a HEPA filter.

Dingbat- We had 2 Roomba's & the big dogs were all afraid of it. The chi constantly attacked it though. If you get it make sure you unplug during storms. Surges killed both of mine. I didn't replace it this time because it's not practical for me to only be able to charge it when I' m home.I had it on a really good surge suppressor too.It did really cut down on the hairy dust bunnies. I miss it !

I find the bagless vacuums in general are pretty much useless. They get clogged up and lose suction too fast, and there's always more dirt than you can realistically remove, so they seem to have a shorter lifespan.

I use an old Kenmore with biodegradable bags. It's lasted forever and only has two easily accessible filters to clean. And it has pretty decent suction. Biggest downside is it's loud. If this one ever croaks, I'll get a similar model but with a HEPA filter.

Well our girls would probably run from it, but the boys is another matter. These guys are pretty much fearless, and especially if it bumped into them. They would just kill it. From the AKC description of the breed..."Bold, courageous and fearless."

I think the Dysons big slogan is 'Never loses suction'.

The new cyclonic vacs can be washed. Dyson,Bissell & Europro. I wash mine out after 2 or 3 uses. Filters & cyclonic chambers. It really helps keep the suction good.
DB- I know what you mean, believe it or not my Chi thinks he is the biggest & fiercest dog in the world. Tried to rip the throat out of my neighbors 120 lb yellow lab. Chase didn't even notice him hanging onto him !He attacks the other neighbors lab all the time & she thinks he's playing. We have to put him inside whenever we use lawnmowers, weedwackers, etc. Afraid he would lose a leg attacking them.He attacks the vac all the time.Makes it kind of interesting to try to clean. He's not to fond of mops either. The Roomba almost seems to chase the dogs & cats. Wherever they go to get away it seems to follow !

I haven't yet figured out how to clean out the cyclonic part of the Dyson.

Typically when you want to clean out a vacuum, you need another vacuum to clean the first one, hence you need to buy a cheapie shop vac, take the dyson outside and vacuum and blow out the Dyson with the shop vac. Of course then you need to clean the shop vac, so since you are outside anyway you then clean out the shop vac with the Dyson. Now since you cleaned the areas in the Dyson with the shop vac, that you couldn't empty out in a normal fashion and then sucked that back up into the Dyson where you can empty it, you are done.

Voila!!

Success

I have a Dyson - the Animal one.  I LOVE it.  It picks up a whole cat worth of cat hair every time I vacuum.  It picks up hair you don't even know is there.

We had a Hoover Windtunnel for a few years and purchased a replacement for it.  The replacement started to fall apart within the first month.  We returned it to the store as it was junk.  We got a Dyson animal instead.  Wow!! We have three cats and we have to empty the thing every time we use it - it sucks up that much stuff.  The important thing is to remember to clean the filter.  We forgot about it and it had an inch or two of stuff on it.

Speaking of Electroluxes, we have one from 1970's that my Mom gave as a hand me down.  We use it in our finished basement around the litter boxes, etc.  It works great for that - but doesn't do as well as the Dyson for pet fur.
