What kind of vacuum cleaner do you pet owners use and why?

My problem is that every vacuum I buy and use breaks in 6 months. I've been using a Eureka (the one that is green with the collapsable round handle.)
I was on my 3rd one.
These were cheap but really great at first. I've also had Hoover for 200 bucks, Dirt Devil for around 200 and 3 Eurekas 60 bucks a piece.
I'll google my question too. Vacuum cleaners suck!! (ba da bamp)  Wink

I have a Miele "Cat and Dog" vac. It picks up like nobody's business. With two dogs that shed big-time twice a year, and two cats, this place always has tumbleweeds. I also replaced all carpeting with laminate or linoleum.

The Miele is expensive but beats the replacement cost of other vacs.

Believe it or not we have a 15-17 year old Electrolux that has been sucking up dog/cat hair all that time. We wore out a brush/roller, burned out a switch but it is still working. Paid $300 for it way back when, this thing will probably outlive us. Keep in mind that during that time we have had at least 5-7 long haired dogs and 1-3 cats in the house. The place looks like a snowstorm at times, but this vacuum keep working, does a good job too.

Of course they don't make this model anymore and a replacement Electrolux costs between $1200-1400 so until this one actually goes up in flames we will continue using it.

We have a Bissel Pet Vacuum. It works wonders! It comes with a pet brush that you hook up to the hose and it picks up hair off of everything. We use that for the couch, pillows, scratching post.... The main part of the vaccum has a button to turn on a floor brush that works great too. We love it!

Ooh, I just bought a Sebo last month.  I found this list to be quite helpful. I find that it picks up pet hair very well and is quiet and maneuverable. It's a bit on the expensive side, but I think it's a product that lives up to its reputation.

Miele is a good product and so are the old Electrolux.  Unfortunately, Electrolux is not for sale in the US anymore.  Eureka bought the rights to market under the Electrolux name in the US and they sell a rather shoddy product.

I have an old Hoover Celebrity from the 70's.  Still working great. Picks up pet hair.

I was using the Dyson, but moved it to the upstairs vac when I got the Bissel Healthy Home pet vac. It's expensive & heavy, but picks up hair & sand on floors, rugs & furniture. I can't do the 1 st floor without emptying it. That's how much more it picks up than the Dyson. Plus the hose will reach all the way up the steps. No more carrying vacuums. I had an old Electrlux that was great but it finally bit the dust & couldn't be fixed.

How much was the Bissel? I know the dyson is about $500. Hope our electrolux last forever. The new ones are supposed to be junk.

Dingbat- It's about $250. Watch for a sale, I got mine at Kohl's online. It was 605 off & free shipping, plus I had a 15% off coupon. Like I said its heavy & hard to push but worth it. We have 2 cats & 5 dogs & lots of allergies & its making a hugh difference. My carpets are old & it looks like it is getting stuff out of them thats been there a while. There was also a $30 rebate from Allergy rewards. The regular Bissell seems to work really well too. I know 3 people with multiple pets who have that one.

good to know about the bissel! i generally don't mind heavy because it makes me think sturdy/rugged! i have the dyson canister because i have hardwood and rugs. works well, but don't know how it would do on actual carpet.

Love my Dyson.  It is just the standard yellow model.  Does a great job on
pet hair and long girl hair, too!

Ok, My husband insisted today that we get the Dyson D17 Animal. It was a world of expense but my husband swears we'll never have to buy another vacuum again. I hope he's right. I was all nervous. But I've already spent 600 bucks for 2 Hoovers and a Dirt Devil and $70 a shot for 3 Eurekas. What a waste. I never had one last past a year. That doesn't count the mini vacs I've also been through.
Anyway if the Dyson is worth it's salt, it'll pay for itself. And a 5 year warranty.

I used it and it was amazing. Sucked the carpet pads all fluffy again. Like it was new.
Mind you, there are still stains, but the hair, fuzz and dirt is gone. It unveiled the stains that I didn't even know was there. Now the carpet is so clean you could see the difference.

We did the 20% Bed Bath Beyond coupon and saved about 100 bucks. A totally anorexic girl was the cashier. She actually had a piece of food stuck in her teeth which to me was like a mixed signal. Maybe that was her entire meal.

Thanks everyone for the great advice.
