Never underestimate the power of crazy cat ladies!

« on: July 18, 2012, 05:40:27 PM »

I've had plenty of positive experience with Feliway calming cats in the past.  But what happened today was almost unbelievable.  This stuff is amazing!

Ever since my "grand-cat" Auri stayed for a few days in the beginning of July, and again for two days this week (all due to excessive heat and the fact that my daughter doesn't have air conditioning where she lives), we have been having trouble with one of our cats, Isis.  For a long time, Isis has hung out in our spare bedroom during the day.  She and DH would sit together on the futon and socialize, or Isis would sit on the cat tree, and while she was there, we were easily able to apply her transdermal hyperthyroid medication.  However, when Auri was here, we kept Auri mostly confined in that room, to avoid hostilities with our four, who were not happy about the "invader."  (Isis, in particular, is a nervous individual, and does not do well with most other cats, even ours.)

After Auri left the first time, Isis absolutely would not go in that spare room that had been her favorite hangout any more, I assume because it had Auri's scent in it.  She began spending her time in our bedroom, and going under our bed a lot.  This made it very difficult to give her medication, among other things.  We had to move Isis' food and water into the bedroom, because she wouldn't even go in her usual place to eat and drink.

After we had a horrible time trying to get Isis out from under the bed for her meds this morning (despite the fact that Auri had gone home again), I remembered that we had an unopened Feliway refill.  I told DH to plug the Feliway diffuser in an outlet in the spare room.  What he reported was astonishing!

Within ten minutes of his plugging in the Feliway, Isis went from distressed pacing and mewing in the hallway, refusing to enter the room even if he sat there, to walking in and sitting on the futon with him, relaxed and calm enough to even let him brush her!  It's like someone threw a switch!  She's completely gone back to her old habits in the room.  Tonight's medication time was a breeze.  Isis and DH are now enjoying a video together in there.  (We are keeping our bedroom door shut to keep her out from under the bed, until we are sure that she's not going to hide.)

Feliway is miraculous.

Amazing!  I hope the Feliway continues to work its magic with Isis until she is again comfortable without it.

I'm so glad you thought of using it for Isis.  It's heart-wrenching when our kitties are not happy.  And you certainly don't need anything that makes giving her medication more difficult!
