Mr. Wiggles Pantry

We are a non-profit pet food bank serving the Hampton Roads Virginia area. The goal of Mr. Wiggle’s Pantry is to assist pet owners who are dealing with financial difficulties because of a loss of job or another unexpected financial crisis. No pet should have to leave their family because of this. We are operating on the generosity of others to donate pet food which will be re-distributed at various mobile pantry sites. To qualify for assistance, a person only needs to show is proof of the financial issue (a recent unemployment check stub, etc.) and a willingness to volunteer with the pantry for at least 5 hours per month.

Virginia-Hampton Roads area-

http://www.dailypress.com/dp-local_makingadifference_1213dec13,0,4087519.story?page=1

Daily Press December 13, 2009

"An Isle of Wight couple are looking out for local pets and their owners across Hampton Roads.Waverley Traylor and his wife, Margaret, have a passion for animals and have extended their love for pets to their annual goodwill effort — Santa Paws.

"This is what we do for Christmas every year," he said.

Serving needy families
Santa Paws has expanded its efforts since helping just five families in 2002. Last year, it helped 240 homes with 360 deliveries. This year, the program is expected to help 350 homes with over 500 packages. Their coverage area includes nine cities and five counties, stretching from Southampton County to Virginia Beach to Williamsburg.

http://www.dailypress.com/dp-local_makingadifference_1213dec13,0,4087519.story?page=2

"When Christmas is over, the Traylors stay busy with their year-round food bank for pets that helps families who can't afford to feed their animals. This preventive measure helps ensure that no pets will become sheltered needlessly."

Santa Paws also operates a Food Bank for pets. In these hard economic times it sometimes becomes a struggle to provide for oneself and their pet. To prevent the pet from suffering, nutritious food can be provided for urgent circumstances. If pet food cannot be purchased until payday, then a call to Santa Paws can provide the food needed until the pet owner can get back onto their feet.

Donations of Dog and Cat food are urgently needed to support this effort. Please keep dry food donations to bags ten pounds and under. Many deliveries go to pet owners that are unable to handle large bags of food.

Note that the Food Bank operated by Santa Paws operates not just at Christmas, but year-round for those in need.

Though there's nothing on the Isle of Wight Animal Control pages regarding the pet food bank, this is the right Mr. Traylor, AKA Santa Paws.  Suggest contacting either Animal Control or the Traylors at the number above if you are in the area and need help.

In addition, we are working hard to help keep pets in their present homes (so that they are not turned in to shelters) by starting our Pet Pantry, and hopefully eventually obtaining grants or donations to be used to provide spay/neuter assistance.

http://www.wset.com/news/stories/0209/592048.html

WSET-TV February 5, 2009

"In just one day, you have responded. We told you about a Pittsylvania County group starting a Pet Food Bank.  At the PetCo in Danville, just half-way through the day there was already enough pet food collected to feed several animals.  And that has Animal Welfare League members excited.

"Ginger Sellers, Animal Welfare League - "Well, on these cold nights like tonight, it's going to mean a lot. As we-- our organization-- meets and gives out this food, I think it's going to be a real plus for the pets."

"The food will be distributed to families that can't afford to feed their pets right now.  The organization hopes this will help more families keep their pets at home.  If you would like to donate, here’s a list of pet drop-off sites:

"In Chatham—Food Lion, Southern States, Animal Clinic. In Danville— Petco in Coleman and Animal Medical Center.

"If your business would like to participate in the pet food bank program, you can call: 434-432-0080."

Virginia Gazette November 28, 2009

Fish, an all-volunteer food pantry on Waller Mill Road, has been holding steady on food donations. Fish, which also gives away clothes and housewares, is preparing for the rush for winter supplies.

Pet food is needed as well. Fitness Together is collecting pet food for Fish and Grove Christian Outreach Center to help struggling families feed their pets.

The pantry of Grove Christian Outreach Center is also doing well, despite unprecedented growth in the number of clients it serves. Unlike the other pantries, Grove buys the bulk of its food at reduced prices from the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank and supplements its supply with food donations from the community.

Pat McCormick, executive director at Grove, said that her food pantry has seen a 20% increase this year in the number of people going to the pantry. The pantry serves around 170 families a month, up from 75 two years ago.

Ani-Meals is our pet food pantry. It offers pet food and related pet care items to residents of Fairfax County, and the surrounding area, who may require assistance during these difficult economic times. This important program provides pet-related support for people who face financial difficulties or unforeseen situations such as job loss, illness or loss of the family’s key provider. We recognize that pets provide a great source of comfort during difficult times such as these, and are working to ensure families are able to keep their companions with them rather than being forced to surrender them to an already burdened shelter or rescue organization. On designated days, pet food is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. To speed up the process, please fill out the Ani-Meals Application in advance and bring it with you when you come. You may also fill out this application upon visiting our administrative offices.

Please call for more information.

HOPE Program Offers Help To Those In Need

The Virginia Beach SPCA is implementing a temporary program called Help Out Pets Everywhere (HOPE).  It will provide help with:

Dog and cat food,
Clinic services,
Other services as determined.

The HOPE program will help people with pets who are having a hard time making ends meet.  The economic downturn has affected everyone, some more than others.  People who meet eligibility requirements (i.e. unemployment statement, food stamp eligibility, or foreclosure notice) can receive pet food and limited veterinary services. “We want to help people keep their companion animals during economic crises” said Sharon Adams, Executive Director, for the Virginia Beach SPCA.  “We trust that by helping people through a tough time we can offer hope to families who feel as if they are losing everything, including their furry best friends.”

The Virginia Beach SPCA is partnering with Farm Fresh and our donors to provide bags of dog and cat food to families struggling to feed their families and their pets.  The Virginia Beach SPCA Clinic will waive office visit fees for eligible families if their animal becomes ill or injured and needs care.  Other services will be developed as we learn what families need to get through this crisis with their family pets.  Amy McNally will be the central point of contact for the HOPE program at the Virginia Beach SPCA and can be reached at 427-0070 Ext. 13.  People wishing to be considered as a HOPE recipient, should call for an appointment.

Remember that we are open two days a week for both pet food collection & distribution:
MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS, 10AM to 1PM
at our administrative office downtown. We are located at 415 S Main Street - in the Clore Office Building (corner of Scanlon and Main Streets). Come and say "hi" to our Cher who will take care of your pet food needs and register you with our program.

This program is second in need, next to the Community Spay/Neuter Program. We maintain a pantry that stocks both cat and dog food, as well as litter and other incidentals. Food is delivered to those who contact us either once or on a monthly basis. This program greatly impacts the community and helps people maintain a relationship with their pet/pets. It also gives us a chance to build long-lasting connections with individuals or families who often have other needs that we can pursue.

Please contact HSC if you have any questions.
