Has anyone used these?

Renal Essentials  (Vetri-Science) fish flavor

Just wondering if the smell of these is really strong.  Just opened a bottle for the first time.  These are chewables.

I've used the NuCat senior and regular tablets and they both have a strong smell. Katey likes them but the others, not so much. I would imagine the chewables would be even stronger because of the oils and moisture.

Thanks, bug.  Yes, the smell is quite strong...wasn't sure if they had gone bad or not.  Gave one to another cat and he had a difficult time chewing it, even broken in half, so did not give it to Davey.

That seems a little odd because they should be soft. Maye you did get a not-so-great batch. Is there an expiry date on them? Mine all have an expiry. You could always give Vetri-science a call or email them. They were good about answering all my questions when I contacted them.

I've used these religiously for five months now on my kitty that has renal insufficiency. I spoke with a nephrologist at a local specialty animal hospital and he said that renal essentials are his favorite supplement for cats who either have renal insufficiency or have chronic kidney disease.

My kitty is at a point where we know his kidneys are not functioning the way they should but he does not have elevated BUN/creatinine and is not a candidate for calcitriol or azodyl right now. He just had lab work two weeks ago and almost every one of his values had improved (a little, nothing very drastic) after being on renal essentials for five months. His Ca:Phos ratio was a tab bit higher but still within normal limits. They have a VERY strong fish smell and it took a few tries to get him to eat them without being wrapped in a pill pocket, now he gets excited at dinner time because he knows he gets his treat. They are not soft and look/feel just like a human multi-vitamin, but because of their flavor they're like a treat. I spoke with a vetriscience rep and she said the smell and all was normal, they are not supossed to be soft, but are chewable almost like a bigger kibble. Now I break it in half and he has no problem chewing it, he will even eat them whole now. In the beginning I also ground them up with a mortar and pestle and mixed into his canned/raw food, he loved it. That might be an option for you JustMe, if your cats are having a hard time chewing them.

Overall, I am very satisfied with them and will continue to use them. It honestly can't hurt, it's essentially a multi-vitamin tailored to cats with renal/urinary complications.

JM, are you sure these are chewables because on their website they only show the tablets.

The UT Strength Feline are available in chewables, are you using these:

The chewies should be soft. The others are dry tablets, like the NuCat vitamins I use.

Bug, when I called the rep I asked if there was an issue because they were labeled "Chewable Tablets" but they weren't soft and looked like caplets. She was very helpful and said she knows it could be a little confusing, but they only sell one kind of feline renal essentials and they're called "chewable tablets" because they can easily be chewed like kibble, but are not "chewy". Tell me if that doesn't make sense, I'm taking itchmo breaks in the middle of a load of homework.  Cheesy

Thanks for the info, Jessica.  Glad you are having good results.

bug,

I tried called them, but the person to talk to was out for the day.  So will try again Monday. There are numbers on the side of the bottle, but don't know if they are a best by date or not.
