My kitty saw one last week and got a spinal adjustment and a supplement Maitake-DMG for her immune system.
Don't know much at all about holistic veterinary practice and would welcome feedback. Thanks!

I would be curious too. I see a lot of people mention them on the feline IBD forum I watch. But even with my normal vet I want to be able to look up something scientific to back up what they are doing or recommending. Most of the conversation I see is 'just do holistic' but I never see talk of the pros or cons.

I imagine it's much like with human medicine. If I get sick, I'll go to an MD. If regular medicine can help me, I'll do that. But if regular medicine can't do much or has a big downside, I'll try an alternative. For example: I hurt my back once, went to the doctor, and he said he couldn't do much except give me pain meds and recommended I see a chiropractor. So for our pets, there's no reason we can't seek opinions from both regular and holistic vets, as long as you make sure supplements and medications don't conflict with each other. I guess the ideal would be a DVM with holistic training.

Well, i live in Iowa so mosquitos are horrible here. SO most vets highly recommend the heartworm med. I have had a friend offer me a detox for sammy that she swears by, but when i asked her how it would affect the med i give him for heartworm she asked me why i would waste my time giving him the detox while i was giving him "that poison". But everything i have always been told is that you dont want your pet to get heartworm because it is horrible.

About holistic vets. I have taken several cats & my former dog to see them. I currently have a 20yr old CRF kitty. My vet clinic recently hired a holistic vet and she has "prescribed" 3 different herbal remedies for Remo who is also getting hydrated at home by me. In addition he got a traditional antibiotic to clear an infection. I firmly believe the combination has much improved his health over the last several days. I personally believe in the holistic approach wherever possible. Traditional medicine tends to treat the "symptoms" not the underlying cause. Holistic medicine has been around a very long time with very positive results. She has also offered acupuncture should we decide he needs it. My dog was also a regular at the chiropractors, which alleviated some joint pain. The way to look at it is, if it is a reputable holistic vet you don't have anything to lose by trying it. You can also google whatever is prescribed. I googled the meds she gave me and they were all specifically for detoxifying the kidneys and bringing the immune system into balance. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I will be monitoring sammy to see if the blood comes back if so, i think i am going to try the holistic vet and see what he has to offer. Cant afford to take him right now with all the money i have spent already, so i am keeping my fingers crossed that the blood will not come back, but i have a feeling it will.

I wish I would have access to a holistic vet. I firmly believe there is a place for both, traditional (whatever that means)and holistic medicine. My first choice would always be holistic medicine. I firmly believe our pets get a lot of diseases because of all the vaccinations and poisons we put on/into their bodies. A pet on good nutrition and immune system supplementation will be in better health - period. A healthy pet is much less prone to infestations.

You might want to check out this site: http://www.ahvma.com/It's the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. We found our holistic vet through here. We have indeed seen positive results. Still working on our severe allergy baby but things are looking up for her.

Misty sees a holistic/conventional vet. He does both. We have seen great results for alot things. She also has her conventional vets at our clinic. Its kind of neat to see them all working together.
my vets do both also. i love the options
