At what age should a puppy get a heartworm test before starting preventive?

Vet said I didn't have to do one but I calculated his age and he is actually right at 7 months old and I thought he had to be less than 6 months at the very most .
I don't want to give him the prevent with out a test if he needs one.
I think she might of calculated his age wrong cause she said something about right at 6 months.

Appreciate you'alls help with this
Thanks

Even though I don't have a puppy, all of my dogs have gone in for an annual heartworm test (blood test) before starting meds to prevent it.  In my area, this is done in the spring.  It used to be that we didn't need to give the preventive meds in the winter, but are now on a year round monthly schedule.

Years ago, it was very dangerous to give the meds if you didn't know that the dog was heartworm negative--it could be fatal.  Am told this is no longer the case with the newer meds to prevent it but I would want to know if he had been exposed to heartworm so that a treatment program could be started to get rid of it if need be.

Agree with you about not giving the meds until after the test and would try to get that done in the near future.
