We miss you KD

I have some Periactin on hand for when KD (CRF kitty) loses her appetite.  But it has a really drastic effect on her; she eats like crazy and gets kind of agitated. I hate giving it to her, so she only gets it as needed - maybe one dose (= 2 mg or half a pill) once or twice a week.

Does anyone know if it's available in a lower dosage than 4 mg pills? I'd like to see if a lower dose, maybe 1 mg at a time, will get her to eat without the drastic side effects, but I can only cut the pills down so far. I know it's a human drug, so I wonder if they make it in a lower dose pill for young kids that I could then cut down.

OF, If you can find a compounding pharmacy near you, they can make the pill "cat size" in the right dosage you want.  Your vet would have to request the prescription though.

We have used 1/4 - 1/2 a pill when we used it.  But we use mirtazapine on our IBD cat.  Can also make hyper, but we only give it to him once a week.  Would at least be worth asking about.  It is an anti-depressant that also increases appetite and controls vomiting.

Hmmm. My sister's a pharmacy tech, maybe she would know. Thanks guys!

I also wonder just how much this stuff costs when it's sold to humans. I'm pretty sure my vet's office is ripping me off.  Roll Eyes

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.
