I don't use flea collars or flea powders or "herbal" flea sprays on or around the cats. But flea season is almost here. Vet recommeded Advantage... I've used it on the cats twice in two years (one application once a year only) ... it worked, but what do you think about using it third year in a row? Will I be playing "dice"? I cannot use DE because my daughter has allergic reactions to such things.

Kaffe, Out of all of them I love Advantage the best. It works so good. I have to use revolution and that's a lot stronger. But have never had a problem with Advantage.

Thank you Trudy! I really really try to limit my use of these topicals, but sometimes, you gotta!

My cats never had a health problem when we used Advantage in past years, but it did stop working. The local fleas may have just built up a tolerance (?)

Yes - I heard about this sort of thing happening with other flea meds - Frontline specifically... people say that after a few years, the fleas develop resistance

Uh oh, so far our results with Frontline have been good, it zapped the fleas - but we'll see what happens this year. Cats' health with Frontline has been fine, too.

Have anyone's cats or dogs experienced health problems from Frontline or Advantage? I'd certainly take that into consideration. For several years, before these topical products came on the market, I used a flea comb to control fleas. However, the cats I have now don't like the flea comb.

That's all I use the rest of the year on my cats - a flea comb... and of course, vacuuming regularly. But in the hot weather months, the flea situation could go bonkers and sometimes I need to "break" the cycle with heavier stuff

Where I live We have so many fleas, ticks,Etc I have to use something all summer long. No ill effects from these products. The only thing i am real careful with is Revolution. It kills everything, fleas, worms, ear mites, so I do use it when I have to. But it has ivemection in it. For fleas I always recommend Advantage. PS- Flea collars don't work at all.

Thanks, guys... I am feeling braver now... as I said, I have used it before with no adverse reactions... I just wanted to re-incheck here since I know most Itchmoneans have had TONS of experience with pets big and small.

When I asked my vet ... she stated Frontline was the LEAST one found systemically ( Ie in the blood stream) ... I use De flea on the cats and frontline on the dog

Borax on the carpet works really well. (Sprinkle and vaccum.) Maybe that wouldn't trigger allergies? We had a thread on some other remedies. http://itchmoforums.com/veterinary-and-medications/natural-flea-protection-products-t499.0.htmlPoco had an allergy to something last summer, but I was never sure what it was. We didn't have a flea problem in the house nor on him but he could have been bitten a couple of times. So if that was it and not pollen, it would be a bad allergy. Do any of the vet products actually repel fleas so your pet would not get bitten at all? (Even while out at a park or in the woods?) That is what it would take to avoid triggering an allergy. I hope this year isn't so bad, though a soap and cream rinse I got from the vet really helped to calm things down.

With Borax do you need to wear a dust mask while applying it so as not to get it in your lungs? And then do you take the pet out of the house while your treating the house also so they don't breathe it in and keep them out til vacuuming is all done? With table salt there is no danger of dust particles from talc and I know it works as well as Borax but without toxic dangers.
