Dear NY Foodies,

Earlier this week the Ithaca Journal ran an article, "Cornell moves toward sustainability: Bovine growth hormone touted as 'green'," about a Monsanto-funded study that claims the artificial growth hormone rBGH benefits the environment ( Shocked ) . We thought you might like to read the article yourself, and post a comment on their blog.

The study alleges that since the use of rBGH allows fewer dairy cows to produce more milk, overall there will be less cows producing methane gas, thereby cutting down on greenhouse gases. This claim has already been refuted by the FDA, as is noted in a recent Scientific American article.

It's important that you tell the Ithaca Journal why you prefer artificial hormone-free dairy products and let them know it isn't 'green' to turn cows into milking machines. This is a good opportunity to reach out to citizens in your community who may not know about the harmful effects of rBGH.

Thanks for taking action,

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Monsanto Co. (MON) is looking to divest its animal product Posilac, a hormone which is used to increase milk production in cows, in the coming months, the company said Wednesday. Monsanto said it seeks to divest the product to focus more on its core seeds and traits business. The company did not disclose additional details about its plans to divest the product.
