RIP little angel Katey

« Reply #15 on: August 06, 2009, 02:16:54 PM »

Mine are the opposite with the nail trimming. They can't stand having their front claws done, but the back ones are easy. Katey (20 years) has to have hers done often as she winds up having trouble walking if they're too long. At that age, she just doesn't go to the scratching post like she used to and usually has very thick nail sheaths that we have to peel off.

We found a method that works very well. The philosophy is that if they can't see their nails being clipped, then, it's not happening. Dh holds them and covers their eyes and I clip away. Strange, but it works for us.

Beautiful pictures of your kitties! Baby does have quite an intense look and does remind me of MC catgirl you-know-who!

It's wonderful that they are all getting along so well. Sounds like WhoShe is indeed a sweetie!

Agree with bug - there was not a problem in the first place which makes their getting to know each other so smooth and without hassle. Glad you have a big heart and took both whoshe and baby.

Congrats on managing to get most of her claws clipped!  Sounds like Rusty is enjoying having other cats around.  I bet he & Baby will be playing in no time.

Torties tend to run things - so I'm not surprised that she decided she was in charge!! Wink

Cheesy  WhoShe may be the senior one, but she is gonna rule the roost for sure!  I agree with catmom5--those torties know how to take control.  Congratulations on getting her nails clipped.  That's a hard job with a cat who may not be used to it (hey, it's hard enough when they are used to it.)

I'm so happy for you for your additions to your family.   Smiley  My heart is happy that you found room for both of them.  Senior kitties appreciate the love they have been given.

I've really enjoyed the pictures Kiss  Thank You!

PS  We are envious of the nail clipping success Tongue

Hi, Rusty is Not a happy camper  Angry  No kitty kisses for Mom (See Pics). Rusty & who still hiss @ each other caught whoshe hissing @ Rusty last night. what about food like Ok, Sometimes Rusty doesn't eat all his food & whoshe will eat it when he walks away. Also Whoshe can't eat dry food which my other 2 do (Rusty I had taken off of kibble till these 2 came here) so naturally she is more into the canned as she has some fragile teeth @ 20 yrs of age.IF Iwere to take them off the kibble should I give them more Canned?? and can I give  whoshe extra helping of canned with out upsetting other 2 ??

Aww, too bad Rusty $ Whoshe are still having some issues.  That may just be how they interact since she's so old and small compared to him.  Maybe she's just on the defense so that big boy cat won't hurt her.  Or maybe it's just the tortietude in her, she rules the world and he's in her way.

Can you feed the separately?  Maybe it would be good to put her in another room to eat her food.  Don't change Rusty's usual place of feeding since he needs to still feel like he's the special cat of the house.  But it might be better for everyone if Whoshe can have her own space to eat and all the competition is out of the way till they are done.  That way you can feed everyone the right amount for their weight and appetite.  Good luck!

It takes time, don't be too concerned.  It's a lot for kitties to make this adjustment, and work out their territories and feeding, etc.

My dilute tortie (17 yrs old) is still hissing and swatting at my kitten boys, who have been with me about 9 months (the "kittens" are way bigger than she is now).  I think she just lets them know she's in charge, and that she'd prefer to be left alone (and she's tortie).

Lots of vertical space - places where they can climb and hide, seems to help with tension.

I'm unclear - was Rusty getting kibble before the 2 new cats came?  Does Whoshe try to eat the kibble?
I'd try to give Rusty what he is used to (and lots of love and attention, too).  I agree with Petslave, if you can feed them in different areas, that can be helpful.  You can't always prevent one from finishing off another's food - but I think it helps if they all know they have "their place" to eat.  If Whoshe eats in a separate area, you can give her extra food, too.

Yes, Rusty was off kibble I didn't like some of the pet food recalls so I had him on just canned Wellness He loves  the turkey Smiley Then when Whoshe & Baby came they had kibble but it's almost gone & I am thinking of just switching to canned instead of Kibble I think it's better & healthier.
