Well, I think it's great that Otto and Eppie can go outdoors and do what they do, inspect their territory, lie on shed roofs and watch the world go by. I think it makes for a more contented, well adjusted cat. I just I wish I could do that here.
JJ: when the snow melts I'll try to video one of our walks and post it under MarkT's cats.

I also think it is just great that Eppie and Otto can go outside and enjoy their natural habitat. Where you live sounds like a little bit of heaven to me! I feel so sorry for my poor cats, having to miss all that they were meant to enjoy, but it is MORE than animal unfriendly here, so sad! when I read about your kitties roaming at will, it makes me feel like a prison guard. However, many of the cats from where I rescued my bunch are now deceased for one reason or another, except for the few that my friends were able to find homes for. There are 2 or 3 that we still recognize roaming around in that area, but the others are not to be seen now.
What is the saying, a short life but full and exciting, or a long life but boring and tedious. Which is better. I really can't say. The photos of Otto are just beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing them with us. He is an extremely handsome young man.
I suppose I could walk them on a leash like Mark, which is wonderful of him to do! but then I would get fleas! Fleas with 2 or 3 cats would be manageable, but with as many as I have, I would have to abandon my home. I could never use all the toxins to control the fleas. If they could spend a lot of time outside, I think that would make a difference, fleawise, since when the fleas jump off they would be out side most of the time. AND also, I would ahve to spend all day every day giving everyone a Turn!
Yes, I know I have too many, but it is too late now. And If I could find a great home, I would part with a few, but the great homes are few and far between in my area. All my friends are already very well catted!

JoMax I said a set-up like Mark's, not to wall of your yard. Like putting a walk around on top of the fence with an opening so the cats can get down into your garden but stay in the yard. There are many ways to construct protective surroundings for our pets to keep them at 'home' in their own yard without depriving them of anything. Just takes a lil creativity.

Ha - JJ, I think you don't have the sort of setup we do over here! There is no yard as such, what we have are rows of terraced houses each with a length of garden at the back which is the width of the house (14ft) My garden is lawn plus young shrubs / plants at the sides with fences eaither side & at the far end. The surrounding houses are similar - but their gardens are much more established with bigger vegetation for cats to explore & rest-up in whilst watching the world etc. 'Cos the prev owner didnt maintain my garden, it was total weeds when I came 2 years ago - I had to clear it back & start again - hence it's rather bare until stuff grows more. The cats dont get much from being on my bit, they always head through/over the fences to next door plus the next 2-3 gardens.

JoMax then an enclosure wouldn't work for you. Over here we have plenty of cars so if an animal is not in the owners yard they run the risk of being hit by one.

We catboys may not be as quick to suss things out as the girls, but we do have our areas of expertise:

LOL!!! What a cute photo! Reading about yards and roaming spaces makes me so envious! I'd bet my entire apartment is smaller than most of your living rooms. Some day I hope I can buy a house for all the kitties. PS That's great about your babies accepting leashes, Mark T. I tried it out for Mooch (introducing it slowly but..) whenever I'd try putting it on him, he'd become a pancake on the floor LMAO. It was adorable. I wish I'd taken a photo of it!

He does sleep with such amazing abandon - he must feel really safe. Last night he was flat on his back on the bed with each paw (plus tail) streched out in a different direction - like a starfish ... No, I didnt take a pic - in the dark all you get is a black blob, and trying to light him would have disturbed a lovely kip! Perhaps next month's picture theme - pets asleep??

August, I tried putting a leash on my Tommy once years ago, and he pancaked too. Just flattened out on the floor and there was no pulling him. I had bought a special H shaped halter for him and everything, so he couldn't wiggle out of it, but to no avail. He would roll over onto his back or flatten out on his stomach, really comical to watch.
