Well this is day 3 so about time I posted some pics - 2 excuses for not doing so before: 1. I've been really ill- My usual IBS thing I think - accumulated stress of not managing to finish uni work by deadline (went & asked for extension, seems being bereaved & out of focus and enthusiam all term only counts for "family & close friends", and the head of prgram knows it was max so couldnt lie. Pointed out he was like a child and my closest friend of 19 years, but I think it unlikely the board will approve - which means a 40% cap on the essay - not a lot of motivation to write it, nor to finish the degree, 'cos to me unless its a 2:1 it aint worth it) Sorry, bit OT there - anyhow woke with awful stomach cramps etc Weds - only about got myself out to collect him and have barely kept going since - feeling a bit better this afternoon, but very drained. 2. Black cats are really hard to photgraph - he's so laid back he doesnt open his eyes much to look at the camera. So here are those I have managed so far: First day - he'd been there all of half an hour - thats how chilled he is! Day 2 - not that bothered still: And today - finally got the digi camera out - whilst eppie was out exploring the snow (yes, really - see pet pic thread!) I let him wander a bit - he seems to have decided my bed is best option: As you can see, his coat needs some improving - really clumpy, comes out in clouds - hope nothing serious underlying this - their vet checked him but no blood tests done so considering taking him to my vet next week. At least he loves being groomed. And yes, he's one of those cats whose tongue hangs out when he's relaxed!

Awww. What a total sweetheart. I'm sure with some TLC, he'll be as shiny and healthy as Eppie. No cat that I've ever seen in a shelter looks good. It'll probably take a month or so to get the junk out of his system and for the good food you're giving him to take effect. A vet visit is a good idea, though. Maybe get an x-ray and some bloodwork so you know where his health is at today. I hope you feel better really soon. Nothing like being drained for Christmas (if you celebrate). Take care of yourself and enjoy your new baby boy.

Bug, thanks for that - yes do celebrate Xmas, its nice to have a day when everythings peaceful & everywhere is shut - got b/f parents coming for Xmas meal, so will be clearning & preping next week. Plus have to try & visit 92-yo mother before - was due to go Sunday but cancelled 'cos I felt so ill (she needs advance notice for the carers who come twice a day. My sister is doing Xmas itself in case anyones thinking she'll be alone!
In fact this shelter isn't too bad - very well staffed & facilitated, lovely quiet warm runs the each have, and most other cats seemed in better condition. He was there 3 weeks - I'm hoping it was the diet (Hills) , tho both eppie & max were on it for years and their coats were always fine...
He certainly lives to eat - he even tried getting to the empty bowl when he saw me pick it up today.
I had an old black cat called Izzy - probably metioned before, he's very much like her. She was a complete pig and got overweight too. And suddenly descended into kidney failure at 13. If I ever get a scanner I'll have to post some of her inthe 'past' thread. She was also totally chilled and loved to just lie around waiting for the next meal!

Oh what a beautiful baby! Maybe Spartycats can give you some tips on how to get good photos of black kitties. Maybe you could try taking digital pictures of your older kitty pictures, as I'm able to get very close to objects even with my cheap digi camera. I only wish that most of my older pictures were not on slides. I have not found a way, short of getting a scanner or having them transferred to CD, to post my older slides yet. I hope that you start feeling better soon. It's so hard to be not feeling good when it involves both emotional and physical reasons. Hugs

Oh, thanks for posting pictures of Otto, even though you're not feeling well.
He certainly looks relaxed and right at home! I remember you said he was abandoned and starving, before being at the shelter, so it may take some time to get his condition back. How is Eppie doing with him? Has Otto met Mark yet?
No hints on photographing - I'm terrible. Thank goodness for the digital age and the delete button!
I hope Otto's relaxed attitude rubs off on you, and maybe helps you to feel better.

JoMax,
Not trying to be alarmist or anything, but make sure you get a blood sugar on him. Starving, poor coat, very hungry all the time sometimes = diabetes. If the shelter only had him 3 weeks, they may not have noticed if he drinks and pees a lot as well. Vet check is a very good idea.

Welcome Otto! You are handsome! I agree he looks like a guy who needs your TLC, JoMax. And also agree with others that the combo of poor coat and lack of activity suggests that he should have blood work done. It may just be lack of proper nutrition, but better to be safe, in case there is something that needs treatment. I always take newly-adopted cats to my vet, no matter that they were checked by the vet at the shelter or rescue or whatever. Sorry to hear you have been sick. I'm hoping that you will get a bit of TLC yourself and be well soon!

Thanks everyone - yes, Mark took the afternoon off work to be there when I collected & brought him home. Dont think he was going to miss out on that important day!
Eppie still not keen - when she comes across him. She like the ostrich tho' - if she cant see him shes pretty normal, this pm he was on my bed at one end of the landing, she was in the bathroom on her blankie under the towel rail - which looks out on the landing. It was only a bit later when they were actually about 8ft apart on the landing itself she started hissing. He just looked totally nonplussed & ignored her. Then she slunk off slowly back to the bathroom.
But when he's out of eyesight, she sniffs round where he's been, but doesnt seem too bothered. She hissed round the spare room door at him this morning when I opened it to go in - then ran away. I guess they'll get there!
I will try & get him to the vet - joy of trying to get there in the week running up to Xmas, sigh....if I hadnt been ill would prob have done it today.
On the old photos - yes I've tried taking photos of them with my digi camera - thats how I put the pics of Max's montages on his thread. But its takes several goes to get it aligned & focussed...

I agree, it's not the easiest thing taking a photo of a black cat and then if they close their eyes they almost disappear. Flash usually makes for a stark appearance. Strong natural daylight is best, as evidenced by your second pic, though they all look good really.
Otto, what a great name! Hopefully Eppie will take to him soon.
I hope he checks out well at the vet and that you feel better soon.

Otto is looking good! He's a very fine black cat! They are so hard to photograph, I've been there.
I agree with those who suggest a little vet trip for him, and I hope he tests out OK. I hope that you are feeling better very soon, JoMax.

What a sweet looking boy! I look forward to seeing more pictures of him. I know what you mean about photographing black cats, I have much difficulty getting a decent shot of Jack or Spooky. To make matters worse, the design of my house creates poor lighting conditions. How I wish I had more windows or a skylight.
Sure hope you get to feeling better soon, I hate to hear you feeling so rundown right before the holidays. Try to get some rest.

Otto is adorable ! The coat & hunger could just be from the stress of shelter life, but a vet check will relive your mind. For yourself, remember pumpkin & probiotics work for people too. Also try to find some time to relax & pamper yourself. I know easier said than done, especially at the holidays ! It sounds like Eppie is just voicing some mild displeasure & will adapt to her new brother soon.

Otto look adorable, and bless you for giving him a loving home. I am covered in snow here, and we are expecting maybe a foot. It is still snowing to beat the band, so I know we are going to get a big accumulation. I am sorry you have been ill, and certainly hope that you feel better soon. Take good care of yourself. {{hugs}}
