Hello everyone! I'm so glad I found this forum. You've all been so kind - I can't wait to get to know everyone! But first I'd like you to meet Nostalgia.

Nostalgia is a regular ol' domestic shorthair, but with a bobtail. Because it's so short (nonexistent, I should say) she has some spinal difficulties that affect her walk. I'll be getting x-rays soon to see exactly what's going on in there. But she has no difficulties running, jumping, climbing, cuddling, or going to the bathroom (except just recently, she has a UTI right now, the poor dear). We're working on setting up a ramp to my bed for when she has bad days, but most days are good days that involve climbing EVERYTHING.

But I'm getting ahead of myself! I've only had Nostalgia with me for a month, but she has quite the story already. She was born in October of 2009, and she went to the shelter when she was 8 months old. They had her for two months - for a good portion of that time, they were closed due to a ringworm outbreak among some of the shelter cats. I began to volunteer during that time, and while cleaning cages in the hallway (this shelter is horribly overcrowded but they do a wonderful job of keeping everything clean and everyone healthy and well-fed) I fell utterly in love with Nostalgia's big, beautiful eyes. She'd reach her paw through the cage and so softly touch my arm. Maybe it's wishful thinking but I think she fell for me then, too. But somehow, even though the shelter was closed, she was adopted out. I went home horribly upset, and I had the weekend off - but then I ran into a fellow volunteer who told me that Nostalgia had been brought back just a few hours later because she walks funny. I still can't understand that! But it gave me the second chance I needed, and as soon as adoptions reopened I brought her home. Since then she's been treated for coccidia (internal parasites) and right now she's on antibiotics for a bad urinary tract infection. She has no signs of ringworm, and she was one of the cats that didn't appear to be exposed at the shelter, so I'm hopeful that this will be the last of her significant health issues! She's small, just 6.6lbs, but that appears to be a healthy weight for her. She might still grow a little, we'll see!

She's been with me since July 2nd and she's even more perfect than I'd hoped. She's utterly inseperable from me, though I hope that when I go back to college (during the day, I'll be home evenings) she'll realize that I really do come back! She's still a bit of a kitten and loves to play with her toy mice. She even almost plays fetch! ...Almost. Grin She also seems to have a whole extra sense devoted to finding cobwebs and sticking her face in them. Oh, Nostalgia...  Roll Eyes

I almost forgot! I made some silly videos of her here. There's a video of her walking - I'm still working on getting video of her zooming around like a little black hovercraft. Grin And of course plenty of videos of her being adorable! Thank you all again for being so welcoming, I feel right at home already!

Welcome, again -- both of you!

I just watched the Nostalgia and the mouse video. Her gait seems to either be a structural birth defect or a neurological one possibly due to something going on with her spine. I have a girl who had an spinal infarct and now has a strange gait as well (though it has gotten better over time). Nostalgia certainly doesn't care and I'm so glad she was returned because she was meant to be with you. It's just so obvious. Pets with physical or mental challenges are just as wonderful, if not more so, as those without challenges. I think you probably turned out to be angels for each other.

Nostalgia and Vyaavi,

Welcome to Itchmo. I sure hope that Nostalgia gets to feeling better soon. That is certainly a cute name for the little one.

Thanks for sharing the picture and videos of Nostalgia.  What a gorgeous black cat she is!

In looking at the video of her playing with the mouse, I observed her gait and noted that her spine appears somewhat shortened.  That is characteristic of the Manx breed too, although it can occur as a spontaneous mutation or a congenital anomaly in the general cat population.  When I adopted my Manx, I did a lot of reading on the various problems that tail-less and short-spined cats can have (thankfully, Cameo has no problems.)  I don't have the link any more, but one site said that exercise is helpful for improving gait, and that as the affected cat matures, the gait may improve.  I noticed on your video page that you had said you've seen improvements--I hope that continues!

I think it's great that you chose to adopt a "differently abled" cat.  And from her story, it sounds like she was meant for you.

Hello - she's a beautiful girl, love that inquisitive expression - I always think it shows they are happy to be home because it means they are relaxed but interested in life.

Thank you all again for the kind welcome!

Bug - There was no way I could turn away that face! I actually didn't know she was bobtailed for the first day or two of volunteering, and I learned about her gait shortly after that. Her big, gorgeous eyes were the first thing I saw. And now they're the first thing I see when I wake up! Cheesy I'd actually had no interest in adopting a black cat, and I'd promised myself that volunteering wouldn't lead to getting a cat... Nostalgia had other plans!

Catbird - When I adopted her, she had no muscle tone at all from two months in a cage. I could feel every bit of her spine, and her hind legs felt like they were made of bone and loose skin. She's improved dramatically since then - her spine is lined with muscle, and her back legs are getting some solid muscle and a little definition! But the best is seeing how she can play as long as she wants, now. At first she had to rest every few minutes and her hocks would touch the ground when she walked. Now she only does that on soft surfaces or when she's in pain. It's so good to hear that strength and age can improve a cat like Nostalgia! I thought that might be the case, just from having a greater ability to correct any wobble and the experience to know when, but having that confirmed is a bit of a relief.

Nostalgia's name is so lovely, but I have to admit I didn't come up with it. She was named that by her first owners, I think. I don't know any of her history before she came to the shelter but I'm pretty sure she came in alone - probably because of her gait. I don't know how anyone could not want such a beautiful, loving girl!

Here's a picture from Nostalgia's first night in her new home. She took right over and stole my heart AND my bed!

I made another quick video - I don't have a working still camera right now, but I do have a working video camera. Still getting used to it - I found out yesterday that I can change it to close-focus! Oh my gosh! I wish I'd known that before!  Lips sealed

She's a pretty little kitty! I hope her back legs continue to get stronger and she has no more urinary problems.
