Just run updated antivirus and antispyware, then, and don't ever drop your firewall.

Reports presently indicate that AVG can't remove it at this time. 3cats, I use AVG and it flagged the virus as "HTML/Framer.Z" on the daily auto-scan, automatically deleted it, and placed a copy in a "virus vault" for my evaluation, which I then deleted. Perhaps those reporting differently don't have the current version? ~catwoods DH

I've got AVG free version 7.5, (up to date on the virus database), and ran a complete scan and it didn't show up that virus, but I didn't go to the web site Mandy was concerned about.

I think AVG free updates a little more slowly than the paid version. Just saw some info on a tech website that AVG could not remove it as of this morning, but that may not be true now. Same site said Norton wasn't reporting it this morning either; again probably not true now. The antivirus companies confuse issues further by not calling viruses by the same names, unfortunately. It would make it easier for all of us, but they don't.

About HijackThis.
I just want to say that I've used this program in the past and it helped me remove some persistent spyware. I am pretty sure the program is legit.

Also, for those of us concerned about internet security, I recommend running Shields Up! It's probably one of the best, if not the best, free internet security checkup. It will show you how visible your computer is to possible hijackers out there. Scroll down and click on ShieldsUP! http://www.grc.com/default.htm

Just Me - What problems have you had with McAfee? I have always had that and haven't really had any problems with it. I don't have any comparison, though, because I have never tried anything else. Just curious to know if there is a problem with McAfee that I am missing.

I don't know, MandyCat. It came with my computer, and I renewed it several times. When it expired again, I wanted to renew it but I couldn't even access the internet on that computer. To make a long story short, they think something corrupted my computer files. I had to back up everything and restore to original factory settings, and I still don't have internet access on that computer. I had a similar problem with norton in the past. It wouldn't let me connect to internet when it was 90 days from expiring. So, I want to try something that sounds simpler, like the AVG to see how it is.

JustMe: I had lots of problems with Norton using system resources, being finicky to update, and causing glitches; so dropped it in the middle of subsciption. McAfee seems to work for lots of folks, but was a problem causer for me; so dropped it.
If your computer is still XP, AVG Free works just fine. Not the best at detection rates, free version is a little behind in terms of updates, but if you don't go to peer-to-peer file sharing sites or venture into lots of high risk porn sites, it should work for you. I also run the paid version of AVG antispyware. You do need both antivirus and antispyware these days (more recently called internet security suites). Lots of people use AVG Free and Adaware scans that they run almost daily.
None of this stuff is perfect and something can always get through.
If I'm totally paranoid that I've got something, first I run HijackThis analysis. Then if I'm still worried, I will go online for free and run the Kaspersky Online scanner, which is free. Kaspersky is some of the best antivirus software out there presently (and that changes from year to year, too). Just google Kaspersky Online Scanner. It's really good for independent third party checks of your system for viruses, trojans, worms, and spyware, and unlike some of the other free online scanners (like the one called Housecall, I believe), Kaspersky does not give false positives on purpose to get you to buy their software program. Kaspersky runs about $80 at BestBuy if you have the bucks. After you do some downloading and updating of virus definitions, you can use their program free at the online scanner site just to give you peace of mind. Like most virus scans, Kasperksy's online scan takes quite a while; so be prepared.
So hope some of this helps, and would be very interested in what works for other people. Must be a lot of junk out there right now, because my AV and antispyware is sure updating a lot.
Julia, ShieldsUp, by Steve Gibson, is a great site to check your computer's internet visibility on.
If you have a devotee of girlie sites on the web, there's a sneaky little program called Spywareblaster that will prevent fans from getting to some of them. Just pops up a 404 error, and you just claim it's the internet. Spywareblaster is freeware and safe.

I also had problems with Norton and switched mid-subscription. I now run the AVG free with no problems.

I have XP Pro, which I really like and don't plan on upgrading in the near future. I just want the best protection I can get on an individual computer.
I just hate all the games/gimmicks these companies have at renewal time. That's why I thought I'd try a different one.
Does the AVG you pay for do a good job?
