Maybe related to some of Itchmo's problems? I don't know.

China 'spying on Skype messages'

Skype say they are abiding by Chinese laws over internet use
China has been monitoring and censoring messages sent through the internet service Skype, researchers say.
Citizen Lab, a Canadian research group, says it found a database containing thousands of politically sensitive words which had been blocked by China.
The publically available database also displayed personal data on subscribers.

The demise of the Itchmo Forums has once again been greatly exaggerated!!

Thank you Ben and Emily!

When a server "goes down" and if the DNS records are changed, it can take from 24-72 hours for those records to propagate across the internet thru the root name servers... (like making a map to Itchmo thru cyberspace that your computer can read)

The DNS (Domain Name Server) records are like the street number on your house or on the mailbox at the driveway to your house so folks can know they're using the right driveway to you and not going to a stranger's house by mistake.

There's also the off-chance of an entire segment/system down like AT&T had awhile back that took out a lot of the southeast US.

Yesterday it was at first giving me the usual white blank screen.  But later in the day, my internet provider kept coming up with a page that said "this address may no longer be available" (which kind of freaked me out!).  So maybe that message was an indication of what you're saying Offy?

Thanks Ben and Emily for getting us back on track. Whatever it was, I hope it won't happen again!

Yup, address not found. IP numbers and Domain Name Servers are the "map" ingredients - one or the other gets messed up and your website isn't found (usually as a result of a broken server that carries the specific DNS records & the IP address has no driveway or door to knock on until the new server & new DNS record assignment is passed along the information highway.) Changing hosts pretty much has the same effect, the DNS records change and it takes time for it to inform cyberspace of the change of address.. almost as bad as using snail mail LOL.

Then there's always satellites and sunspots that could gum up the works ... downed towers, etc. if you're not dialup  Lips sealed

Once upon a time (less frequent a scenario now) a connection spot in the hardwired lines that crossed the country would take companies/business mainframe systems down for days at a time until the cables/lines/connections were repaired.

And weird things can happen.  Although this is not what happened here, last spring a fire! took down a whole bunch of forums at Proboards for several days.  Servers and the other nuts and bolts that make the forums run can suffer physical accidents, just like anything else.

Thanks again, Ben and Emily!

Thanks from me, too, Ben and Emily!  We could be getting more traffic in the server due to our melamine thread being listed on what looks like a clearing house for resources about the tainting in Asia.  Maybe that overwhelmed it.

Search for 'Itchmo'

It's purringfur's avatar candle--the one so many of us used during the 1-year memorial for the pets killed by melamine.

Thanks again for getting Itchmo back up!  Although there are many "natural" causes that can put a site down, it seems to happen when info on a "hot" issues is being posted/linked.  Coincidence?
