Donna,

We also have a wireless router, but it should be turned off as I had the company wire it through the wall, radiation leery me.  But I wonder if it was reset when the power surge turned things off for a second.  That also happened once before.  I will call today to see if it is on or off.  It was a very strange surge we had, only the computer, TV which are both through the router, may have been the phone, too.   The rest of the house was fine, clocks not blinking etc. I wonder if the wifi is on because I do not see the x'ed out icon at the bottom of my screen as it used to be.  Another good tip!  Thanks.

Donna and 3cats, I called verizon.  Apparently, when the computer came back up after the power surge, the wifi broadcaster and the wireless function settings defaulted to enabled status.  That must have been enough to allow the "insurgent" in.  One other security function-can't remember the name-was still enabled properly.  Thank you so much.  Now I know to always check it after surges or power outages.

I seem to be back.  I don't know why, though.  I just had a session with Tier 3 tech support at my ISP, (you have to stick like a burr at the lower level to get there), and he concluded that there was no DNS problem and had me armed with technical information to give to the Itchmos to prove that.

His theory was that IP blocking of ranges was going on for some unknown reason.  So I was going to email Emily, but happened to see http://itchmoforums.com in the browser address line and just hit it one more time out of curiosity.  And it worked.

So does typing in www.itchmoforums.com as I usually do.

The tech guy had had me clear the DNS cache, but it just didn't work after that.  He got the IP and had me use that as the address and it sort of seemed to work, but not really.  When we hung up the phone, I couldn't access the forums at all.  We were both convinced that I could still not access the forums.

I'd say the DNS cache flush did help, but for some reason there was a delay in seeing that.  Or that I had to go through a sequence of actions, (kind of like a secret handshake), the actualize the fix.

So people should contact their ISP provider and see if they can help.

And be persistent!!!

In order from simplest to most complex, here are
some instructions on how to clear your DNS cache
for Windows XP, apparently not Vista. They're short,
so read all three:

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=330

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/233/clear_windows_dns_cache

http://www.smoovenet.com/articles/clear-dns-cache-in-windows

Rebooting your computer also seems to clear this DNS Cache, which
seems to remember settings for up to 5 minutes, depending on the
entry in your registry. So repeatedly trying to get to a site won't
help if its a DNS cache problem.
If this doesn't work, then persist and call your ISP.

I know nothing of the tech, but I was not able to get Itchmo Forums at all from about 2PM CST on Tuesday, April 22st, through 2:30 today, Thursday the 24th. I tried many times and only got the "cannot display" notice every time. Just now coming back on, thank you to those who have fixed this! I'm in the SE US.

Edited to correct day this started. Guess it just felt longer . . .

I do not have email address for Dingbat, but I have been corresponding with Trudy.  I emailed her 3cat's post with links to instructions, and Klondike's recommendations.

Thanks, and glad to be back. I didn't do anything special, it just came back on - maybe it would for everyone now?

I hope so.  Maybe that is really why I got on and it was just coincidental that I had been working with the tech support.  Because when we had hung up, it looked pretty bad.

It may have been what you were doing after all because you got on much earlier than I did, it would have been 9 AMish my time. As of about 1:30PM here I could still not get on.

Just got an email from RCexplorer & she can't get on again either. While I was replying my xp shut down. Its never done that before, wonder if its connected to these problems ?When I hit start on the computer it came right back & said I had a program running. When I clicked on it it opened right where it left off.I'll send her the instructions in case it doesn't come back.

Thanks Catbird and Peg.  It felt really strange not to be with you all.  I'm so glad we are getting back on, we need to be here for Carol Cry

Trudy is still trying, but can't get back in.  She tried some of the things in 3cat's links, but so far no go.
