I just checked both their profiles and they are not listed as active since yesterday.  I know they were both anxious, so they must not be able to get in.  Darn.  Fizzy1 isn't back yet either, and from the posts on the main page, I know Fizzy1 was anxious too.

Hi All,

Dingbat can't get on the forum here either.

Actually, I saw a bat flying around tonight at dusk.   Tongue

I'm still unable to use my normal Internet service provider to route to the forums.  I have a theory that maybe those of us using small companies for our service providers could have more limited routing available to us and are indeed hitting one of the 'black holes' that article says have been getting more common lately.

I'll contact my service provider tomorrow if there is still a problem.  Maybe the others should do so, too.

As for what is causing the problem everyone had intially in accessing the Itchmo forums, we can only speculate.  But I guess it is the third time in a week or so.

Glad most people are back on and that the forum content is intact.

Klondike,

I have had trouble getting on Itchmo all day yesterday and I have Earthlink for my ISP. That is one of the biggest around.

I do not think it's black holes why would so many people with different servers have had the issue..Did anyone hear of the site was down on Tueday from Ben or Em...if so my guess is you need to clear all the old data and crap out of your puter and reboot. MOST of us could not get in on Tueday....but I would think Ben or someone on that end would know best

I don't think the original problem was routing, (black holes), just possibly now for the few like me that can't get to the forums via our usual ISP's.

I contacted Emily and she is not sure what is going on, either.  Also I have cleared everything, turned the computer and the modem off and on, etc.

It is just that I can't use the small local provider anymore.  I'll contact them tomorrow like I said.  Could just be the delay in posting a new DNS address like Nabiya said, too.  I don't think it has been 48 hours yet since the initial failure.

Emily was not sure if there was a new DNS, though.  It's all very strange but there are a few members missing.

My husband said leaving the computer online for hours gives hackers a good chance to get in.  Does anyone know if that is true?  I didn't think so because what would be the difference between being idle and being active??

DMS,

I know if a router is connected to a pc, and if it is not a secure connection, as most wireless ones are not, a back door can get into.

I have seen how this is done when one who has enough intelligence in this area goes to the keyboard on one's computer, onto the internet and into the back door of the ip address of one's computer - meaning mine, as I locked the router by mistake and forbid, the gaming hour could not begin on time!  Thankfully, the person we know, a professional tech, knew how to get in that way, and she fixed the gaming withdrawal and meltdown with a couple keystrokes and codes!

Last year I had one of my hard drives crap out and my pc would not boot that drive.  It was the dedicated back-up drive and contained everything that was of importance, much like what happened to you.  I did not try to re-format the drive, but rather changed the boot sequence in the bios, and took it to the shop for transfer to a new pc with a new drive.  It cost about $105.00 to transfer everything as that drive gave up its last breath, but well worth that amount for the new drive and years and years of photos, vital scannings and info, research, poetry and 5,000+ gallery images of collected art.  I have never had to go into the back-up, only system restore, so I don't know how that works, but our techie friend would, so I will ask her if you still need this information, especially if the drive was not reformatted before installing the lost software.

Good luck with this issue, it is quite painful, as most of us know!

Sincerely,
Donna

Yes, Itchmo's is up in MA and has been since yesterday morning - thanks Emily, Ben and Filbert - and the honey bees are buzzing around the rhodies - thank you bees!

Donna,

We also have a wireless router, but it should be turned off as I had the company wire it through the wall, radiation leery me.  But I wonder if it was reset when the power surge turned things off for a second.  That also happened once before.  I will call today to see if it is on or off.  It was a very strange surge we had, only the computer, TV which are both through the router, may have been the phone, too.   The rest of the house was fine, clocks not blinking etc. I wonder if the wifi is on because I do not see the x'ed out icon at the bottom of my screen as it used to be.  Another good tip!  Thanks.

I haven't been able to get in from home (south coast of Canada), but I can from the office today (maybe it's working again at home - who knows?)

There was an issue over on Wordpress about a month ago, and it turned out to be some misconfiguration in Texas somewhere that was affecting all Bell Sympatico traffic to the Wordpress site. The techies got together and, after some time, they worked out the configuration error.
