It just goes on and on and on.

Refusing "frog legs" from China for salmonella poisoning from the FDA.gov website, alert issued 5/19/07:
http://www.fda.gov/ora/fiars/ora_import_ia1612.html

If everything you've learned about China doesn't convince you that China is exporting danger, then try this recent list of refusals of China goods (remember that only 1% or less of good are even inspected.  This means that 99% of these products slipped through customs and are at a store near you):
http://www.fda.gov/ora/oasis/4/ora_oasis_c_cn.html

This includes microwave ovens, bean curds, dried jujube, catfish, yams, medical devices for opthamalic use (your eyes), died apples, died peaches, dried pears, vinyl exam gloves, holistic bark powders and extracts, heating pads, frozen breaded shrimp, peanut milk, olive juice, TYLOSIN TARTATE USED FOR CLEANING DOGS EYES, penicillin for animal use, mascara, nail polish, eyeshadow, compact powder (makeup), make-up line pencils, liquid eye liner, TOOTHBRUSHES, lip gloss, make-up sets, candy, dried mushrooms, foot sprays, TV/DVD combos, MP3 players, CARBENICILLIN SODIUM (used to treat URINARY PROBLEMS IN ANIMALS AND HUMANS),  various vegetables, olives, frozen eel, frozen scallops, frozen cod (fish), various supplements for health foods, diet herbal bars, teas, STEVIA (which I use), green tea, frozen sea food mix, sardines, various herbs, thermometers, medical devices for infusion (introvenous) sets used for humans and pets, suction catheters (used in life threatening medical situations to suction blood and mucous from airways), foley catheters (used to insert into the bladder when patient unable to void -- pee -- or during surgical procedures), umbilical cord clamps (used during the birth of a baby to prevent bleeding from the umbilical after birth), ginseng, seedless prunes, frozen raspberry crumble, died prunes, various fish products, grape jelly, dried dates, frozen breaded shrimp, CEFAZOLIN SODIUM (an antibiotic medication), OMEPRAZOLE (generic prilosec medication), various pet toys, canned mackerel, "shimmer" powder (make-up), deodorant, DVD player, toothpaste, liquid hand soap, DHEA (a dietary herbal supplement), child's scooter, frozen crab meat, etc.

I MUST TELL YOU that this is a list of refused things at our borders of China imports for the month of April 2007, when only 1% -- if that much -- was inspected and refused.  This also does not take into account that these shipments will be sent again and again and again until they happen to get passed the inspectors.

BEWARE of what you buy!!!!!  There are VERY, VERY dangerous products out there, folks!  Things that you use and buy everyday for yourself, your family, AND YOUR PETS!!!  PLEASE BE CAREFUL until our lackadaisical and underfunded FDA and USDA catch-up with REALITY!!!  I'm not usually a fatalist or extremist, but this is OUTRAGEOUS!!!

I'm already looking forward to the MAY 2007 reject list!!!

Today, I opened up Mack's weekly can of tuna with water only. Remember this is the can I searched for high and low, was marked very very low sodium (ha!) - most HUMAN QUALITY tuna out there is laced with soybean oil. He loves tuna but gets it only once a week. I mix 1 oz with the other kitty food ingredients, and hand feed him. I knew I was on the right track because he liked this tuna better than the other, and he loved the other.

I had purchased three cans some weeks ago, all bought the same time, form the same store, recent shipments. I opened this the last can. even I could smell something was off. It stunk to high heavens. The other two cans were demonstrably good, I had left overs stored to compare. This one was "off".

Just to test I put it in front of him, and just as I thought he would, he walked away.

I tossed the can. I'm writing the manufacturer, something I realize we all should be doing on a daily basis...

So, WE CANNOT SEPARATE PET FOOD ISSUES FROM HUMAN FOOD ISSUES. PET FOOD SUCKS, CANNOT BE TRUSTED, THERE IS NO LEGISLATION IN PLACE YET.  SO PET OWNERS GO TO HUMAN QUALITY FOOD SUPPLIES TO FEED THEIR PETS.

WE FIND OUT THEY ARE JUST AS TAINTED.  PETS ARE SMALL MAMMALS, THEY WILL GET SICK FIRST, THEY ARE OUR EARLY WARNING SIGNS.

HOW CAN ANYONE SEPARATE THESE ISSUES?  SHEESH!

See this is a great point. No more food/imports from China, HOWEVER since we have been sold out by the usual suspects, we are screwed.

If we were to stop imports tomorrow, there would be massive shortages in everything and CHINA KNOWS THIS

In a previous post you mentioned all of this eloquently, that in effect the Chinese have us at their mercy, that as soon as their inflation rates rise it will cost us as much or more than if we made it here, HOWEVER we don't have the infrastructure here anymore.

Unless the government wakes up and big business looks beyond the short term bottom line, we are pretty much in deep doodoo.

This is nothing new, it was/is a favored tactic of a major retailer, first get a supplier, then monopolize their business then cut prices and drive them down to nothing and then buy them out. This time the supplier has the upper hand and can squeeze us quite well.

time for a drink Grin

I used to think that anyone doing anything weird was weird. I suddenly realized that anyone doing anything weird wasn't weird at all and it was the people saying they were weird that were weird.

Howeve, as Dingbat pointed out - for the entire population to do this, there would not be enough (see how the food is running short at several Premium spots - such as Evangers, they can't accept any new distributors, clients).  The Pet Food Demand for Quality is starting to outstrip the infrastructure.

As much as everyone wants everyone to jump this bandwagon - the base truth is there isn't enough infrastructure/supplies for the entire US population.  So they couldn't do that - and you can't impact the bottom line until you ARE able to do that.

The more of us here  that turn to our local farmers (those of us who are able to do that) and continue to buy local and support that it will turn around and with a great hope the jobs will have to come back to this country also. We have enough land here to grow the food, we do not need to keep importing it. As far as the other things that are imported all are free to buy it or not. But would want an assurance it was not loaded with lead or full of pesticides before purchase or contaminated in any other form not fit for human use in the US. Just like they are rejecting our stuff now we have the choice to not buy any countries things that we chose.

How true, and the current situation (rejecting Pistachios for ants, showing Chinese in masks to protect against those ants) is getting comical.

Tit for Tat, the silent war begins.

Maybe they will keep theirs, and we will keep ours (but methinks a lot of the bulk going into that country is from US Corps. manufacturing overseas - so we will see how this pans out).  Would love to see the jobs return here (But whoa is me, what will the big Daddy Corps. do without their profits?)

karvskitties said "What will the big corps do without their profits?" Well if they do not lower the prices here for the things they are making in other countries - there will be no on here who will be able to afford any of it anyway. So They Will Not See Much if any, PROFIT. Since they are not willing to pass on any of the savings at all they get then we here in the US will as usual look elsewhere like our local store that realizes that they would like to sell something rather than have a no sale for that day or week and lower prices in their stores so those of us with less income due to the hijack of the gasoline, food, utilites prices have less to spend and will spend where we feel the most value for our money.
