Very very sad. I really hope that a new, safe, and proper shelter, is built for the area.

You know this makes me sad, I don't know these people at all but the police and fire departments have both supported Sweetpea.  They had only purchased this property a few days before the fire and were raising money to improve it. They have a lot of support in their community and while I am not disputeing that there were problems with the facility they did a lot of good and saved a lot of animals.

Final point they were not closed down and there is always another side to the story.

Edited to add this shelter is located in Worcester County, not sure what "Magical North" means. As far as I know they did not bring any animals from the south but I do know of at least one in Salem, MA that does bring in dogs from southern states. Don't care for the flavor of this article.

"The Magical North" is how folks who think that shipping pets from the south is the answer to everything.  Apparently, there are some transport groups and shelters in the south who like to perpetuate the rumor that there's a "shortage" of adoptable pets in the north, so shipping pets up from the south is "the answer".

They also like to say that the north has mandatory s/n laws and that's why we need more animals shipped here.

Which is complete bunk, of course.

And while I don't know the people who ran this shelter, I do know that housing cats - in particular feral cats - in the same room as dogs is cruel beyond belief.  My county shelter used to do this until I forced the county to end the practice.  A cage is already highly stressful to a cat - any cat.  Putting that cage in a room full of noisy predatory threats is just torture.

Also, anyone who speaks out against the current leadership is banned and shut down as fast as possible.  Competent, capable leadership doesn't do that.

So that unpleasant flavor you find in the article?  May just be the bitter tang of truth.  I would certainly not support a shelter that has these practices in place.

Lets see what happens from this point on. Will the money being raised be used for a safe building, with animals housed correctly? Will there be enough people involved to run it. It can be done, there are some excellent no-kill places in MA, and the number of animals held at the Paxton location does indicate there is a real need there for a shelter. They just have to do it right, of course. Say a prayer that this happens.

I never heard of "magical north", new one on me.

Very sad for those poor animals lost in the fire.
