Tomkin is an eight year old German Shepherd with spinal issues and weak back legs.  His owner could no longer afford his care.  The local shelter told him Tomkin needed to be euthanized immediately, that an older dog was bad enough but one with health issues would be impossible to rehome.

I found this poor man crying in the park, hugging his beautiful dog. My shelter agreed to take him.  I just had to work out transport details from MD to CT.

Sad, that so many shelters don't even try.

This is very sad.  He's a very handsome boy.  Can he still get up on his own from a lying or sitting position?

He needs help getting up, but he can walk.  It's a bit of a hobble but he gets around.  And there are no urinary/bowel issues. He can do his business without help. He takes Rimadyl and Glucosamine.  The owner was having trouble affording his meds, labwork, xrays.

He's a nice dog.  He did fine on an eight hour car ride with seven cats.

He's a pretty spectacular dog to handle that long in the car with all those cats!! Thank you for saving his life and for putting his owner's mind at ease. And thank you to your shelter for giving him a chance. Poor guy just needs someplace to live out his golden years.

Good to have you back, Arlo . . . and I'm glad that the news is good for Chow and Josh. We missed you!!

Keep us posted.

He's beautiful, and very intellegent looking too.  I hope someone will take to him & give him a good home for the rest of his life.  That's wonderful that you were able to save him, Arlo.

But I'm sad that his original person couldn't be helped out financially somehow so he could keep him.  How much could it cost for another 4-6 years max?  Where is this world's heart?  Will you be able to at least let the man know when Tomkin finds a home?

Someone I met last year had the sweetest young cocker spaniel that they had adopted from a county shelter.  I asked why anyone would give up such a nice dog, and it turned out her person had to go into a nursing home, and it was very upsetting for her to give up her dog.  I asked if the woman was told her dog got a great home, and they were told by shelter staff they don't do that, it's against policy.

SEVEN CATS!!???!!!

Arlo he is a beautiful dog with the black mask that shepherds are so known for. Thank you for having a big heart and seeing that he needed to be saved as he was not ready to leave yet.

Glad also Chow is home with you. Saying a prayer your brother is holding his own.

You know, he looks a lot like a Belgian Malinois with that brown coat & black mask.  Those are fairly uncommon dogs.  Do you know for sure he's a GSD?

Sorry! My mistake.  Four of the cats were Ellie and the kittens.  I thought they were too young for a pet sitter and took them with me.  I brought back three older cats.

Tomkin's human said GSD. I'll ask the vet what she thinks.

I'll call him when Tomkin finds a home.  The shelter has no problem with that. Policy is no details.

That's great that you can call to let him know.  Of course you can't give out the adopter's info, but at least he can rest easy that his old boy got another home.

I was wondering what you did with the kittens while gone, and you took Ellie too!  Travellin cats.

He must be a very special dog.  I'm not even sure how well I would do on an 8-hour car ride with 7 cats, no matter that 3 were baby kittens!

Bless you for helping him, in the middle of all that was going on in your own life.

I hope he finds a good home. I feel so sorry for the man that had to give him up. Sometimes that's the only way, though. Bless your heart, Arlo, for helping.

I have been trying to stay at 13 posts because 13 is my lucky number.  However, I have decided I want to keep Tomkin in my house.  My dear little Peaches loves him.  As long as he has a tree or a fence to lean on, he can do his potty business by himself.  He's only eight.  Others have GSD's (or whatever breed he is) live past 14.  I want him to stay here.  He is a good dog and he likes a million cats around.

Edited to add: He doesn't think baby kittens are edible.
