Pet Railroad uses the internet and a network of volunteer drivers to save pets across North America.
Apollo's journey began in rural Arkansas, where his animal shelter faced a choice: Condemn the stray mutt to death or load him into a silver VW Jetta for a six-state, 1,878-kilometre trip to Canada.
It was an easy decision. Last week, the German-shepherd-mix with a pronounced dent in his head became the latest passenger on the underground pet railroad. A teacher posted a plea for drivers on the Internet and plotted a precise route north, through the rolling hills of Tennessee and the flatlands of Ohio and finally to Brampton, Ont., where Traci Dawson has pledged to keep him until a permanent home can be found.
