Or make that, their fruits. Oh, drat. Which is it? Actually, all four of these produce items are classified as fruits by scientists, regardless of what consumers, grocers and nutritionists think, said Amy Litt, director of Plant Genomics and Cullman curator at The New York Botanical Garden.

Sigh. First they take away the salsa, now the guacamole.
I make salsa myself in season from local produce, and last night made some with tomatillos, garlic, cilantro, onion, and hot pepper that were grown by the CSA just a few blocks from where I live. But avocados don't grow around here, alas!

oooh I am coming over to your house and bring chips! YUM! I don't know what we New Mexicans will do if we can't eat jalapeno salsa because of contamination. There isn't much that can get us riled up, but messing with our salsa... that is a whole 'nother matter! |

So it sounds like the only safe thing to eat is pet food??
This is nuts, glad the fruit market just opened by us. All grown locally and no problems.
I wonder where this all started??

Catbird - just paid $1.99 for an organic avocado! We can grow our own peppers for salsa in the Sacramento area, but avodado trees are iffy and take forever to establish. This is the pitts!

Perhaps this is a good opportunity for a home science experiment? Lets see.......salmonella tainted peppers mixed in a test tube with that so-called safe cyanuric acid pet food, add heat, a little preservative and .......shake it all up together and what happens??? |

I bought organic avocados here in WI on the weekend at 4 for $5. They said "product of USA," I don't know exactly where they came from. I ate them and lived...

that's what I paid for mine also. Organic CA grown. To me, for an avocado, it's worth it! I LOVE the darn things  I'm growing my own peppers and I can get them at the farmers market also. Peppers just started coming in a week or so ago. I should also get them with my farm share soon. Mine are for late/end of season or even after season. I've got my indoor garden started and after it it's about a 4 wks, I'll start another round of plants. If I space the planting right depending on the produce, I should have a steady stream through winter. I'll freeze/can a bunch of summer stuff, but I think it would be nice to have fresh salad stuff in the winter along with herbs and beans etc. Tomatoes will just be [edited] cherry tomatoes as anything else would be too big. I may put indoor window boxes in every room, lol!~ I have radiators under most of the windows, so the plants wouldn't get chilled and I can put plant lights up easy  |
