Teething Syrup Suspected of Killing 24 Children
Two dozen Nigerian children have died, and nine more have fallen ill, after being given teething syrup.

Health Minister Dr. Hassan Lawal has ordered a government investigation into the deaths and urged parents to suspend using teething mixtures.

At least 33 cases of renal failure in children have been reported in Lagos, Zaria and Ibadan since November 3. Nigerian health officials specifically warned parents not to use a teething syrup called "My Pikin."

You were right.

Teething Drug "My Pikin" Kills 25 Nigerian Children

Nigeria's food and drug control agency NAFDAC said 25 children have died in the last fortnight after taking a teething mixture discovered to contain a harmful susbstance, local media said Wednesday.

NAFDAC boss Dora Akunyili said the children, aged between four months and three years, died in government hospitals in Lagos, Ibadan and Zaria while more than 50 others had been hospitalised with chronic kidney damage after taking the drug "My Pikin" ("my child" in local pidgin).

"Last Monday, we concluded all laboratory tests on the drug and found out that it contains a killer element known as diethylene glycol," she said.

She said the agency has shut down the premises of the Nigerian manufacturer and appealed to mothers to stop the use of the drug on their children.

"NAFDAC officers nationwide have been directed to mop up all batches of the offending drug from circulation," she added.

sweet tasting and causes acute deadly renal failure.

Might as well do a PSA: watch out for anti-freeze along curbs, driveways and parking lots. Pets like it just like children do. Even if they don't seem to ingest much, waste no time getting to the vet. If you find a spill, kitty litter or sand will absorb a lot of it so you can shovel it up. Also rags laid on top to absorb it. I then post a sign by the spot. Don't know what else to do about cleaning the residue. You can always call city services where you live.

I'm sorry to be so dense... but honestly, guys, I don;t know how an anti-freeze spill would look or smell like...  can someone describe it to me? So I can do what Straybaby suggests when I do find a spill on the sidewalks or driveways...

Anti-freeze usually has a lurid greenish-yellow color, kind of fluorescent looking.  At least the anti-freeze I am familiar with.

Unfortunately, I have seen enough pets at the animal hospital who ingested this. It's horrible, and they are in terrible pain. It tasts very sweet to pets.
they do make one now that We use, even though We never leave it around, that doesn't hurt the pets. It's more expencive, but worth it.

catbird's description is exactly what the lurid color looks like and did not know it was orange colored also.

I've heard that "safe" antifreeze, propylene glycol, is actually just less toxic, so you still have to be careful with it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antifreeze

There is a big push by some groups to have a bittering agent added.  Unfortunately the chemical they add to do that is said to potentially be a bad water contaminant.  A few states passed laws requiring it, but I don't think it was passed nationally yet.

A pic of bright green antifreeze:
