Melamine had been around a long time, very useful commercial substance, used for all kinds of things that in no way would indicate that it would in any way shape or form be suitable for food.

I wonder who the [edited] genius was that came up with this to be used in food.

I used to think that anyone doing anything weird was weird. I suddenly realized that anyone doing anything weird wasn't weird at all and it was the people saying they were weird that were weird.

Apparently, the Mr. Clean "Magic Eraser" cleaning sponge by Procter & Gamble is made of melamine foam.

I just bought one of these recently for the first time.  I'm going to dispose of it.  I have one cat who likes to open cabinets.  Can't take a chance.

I do have a set of melamine dishes from the 70s when they were so popular, but they are out of reach of any of my cats or dogs.

My Harlem used to be a nut about sponges. I had to hide them. I got a Magic Erasure sponge in the mail once. Yes, she stole and tore that one up also.   Shocked

She seems to have grown out of the habit, thank Dog (or should that be cat?!)!

Ack!  I just bought one for the first time, too.  Saw people raving about it elsewhere.  I debated over buying it, since I wondered if they had saturated the pad with some weird chemical, but the label didn't list one and it didn't smell strange.

So now it turns out it is melamine.

I've used them for years, but for walls and plumbing fixtures and the like.  They are not designed to be used on dishes or things like that.

It's fine with me if they keep the melamine in this type of product.  Just keep it out of my food!  I wash my clothes with laundry detergent, but wouldn't be drinking it.

catbird just had a horrid thought when you mentioned laundry detergent - its probably in it too. So would that mean it could leach out and get into your skin from wearing the clothes people do their laundry with?
