http://www.globefish.org/files/MELAMINE-factsheet_690.pdfThe above article is about fish feed, but it does state that trichloromelamine is NOT approved for use as a sanitizing agent for milk containers and equipment. WTF is Sundloff talking about - used in a cleaning solution? Not approved for milk, but OK for baby formula? It's not to be used in milk production, but it's OK in the production of the other ingredients used in milk products? Yes, back to, "Move along folks; nothing to see here."

Only problem with that method was a low level of background melamine (100 - 200 ppb in samples) that wouldn't go away. We're going currently looking at the HILIC columns to try to get around this. Yep, and once they get the 'poof, unexplained melamine is gone' test methodology in place, guess who becomes the favored lab of the FDA and corporations?

3cat...I can think of no better time than now for you to call Rep DeLauro's office in Washington. I don't live in CT but when I talked to her secretary she wrote everything down and said she was forwarding it to the team of people the Rep has on the melamine crisis...it was about the melamine in US feed from that one souce we found and then a couple days later she mentions melaine in the feed so I can't help but think she is REALLY on top of this! I got the number from her website...

3cat, I cannot imagine what you must be feeling now. I think everyone has given good ideas. There must be other foods that the wee one can have instead of the Nestle product. Surely his doctors will do some research and find something safe.
Blessings and prayers for Hunter, his worried family and all the others who have been/are/may be affected by this terrible situation.
I hope the people responsible are aware of the pain and misery they are inflicting on others.

And is anyone else as angry as I am how we found out this....from an alert AP reporter snooping and asking through Freedom of Information Act??? Why are we the people not made aware of this...
First ZERO level is safe in baby formula but 2.5 ppm in other things was ok as things started to be tested....but now that it is above ZERO we read it is okay....when will the BS stop...I can not for one minute understand the attitude of the people who are paid to protect us and our foods....keeping us in the dark is one sure way for us to become suspicious that there is more going on....Honesty is the best policy I was told as I was growing up....wish all were told that........and if the powers that be don't know what this all means than by God say that...not "don't worry ..keep feeding..." The last paragraph in the AP article that says the pediatrician is worried about the long-term effects shows me he has a heart and a conscious...

Carol, I am not at all surprised at the way we found out. This is their SOP and have been anything but open and honest about anything. It's only when they are found out that they say anything.
Someone has to do some serious housecleaning at the FDA and USDA. Far as I'm concerned, throw all the bums out and start from scratch with people who REALLY are concerned about our health and safety.
To me, the most frustrating part is that they keep doing what they do and people fuss and fume, but it doesn't change a thing. WE NEED SOME ACTION HERE!!

I truly think Rep DeLauro is our best hope...my concerns to others including my own state just either don't get acknowledged or I get a general type of email response that everyone probably gets..

CNN ran a story on it this morning and the reported stated that FDA tested 77 different samples of formula and found the melamine in one sample. She said they told her it is from packaging and came from the plastic in the can? Has anyone else heard this kind of stuff before, that it is the cans leaching the melmaine? If thats the case, how come we didnt hear it when the pet food recalls were going on? And the reporter didnt address any cyanuric acid at all. ETA, here's the CNN story: http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/11/25/infant.formula.melamine/index.htmlI sent an e:mail to CNN but doubt I will hear anything back. Afterall when FDA speaks, its the gospel, dont need to ask anymore questions of them.

There was an op/ed piece last week, that I found educational and scary. On a more concrete note, melamine not only has widespread industrial applications, but is also used to buttress the foundation of American agriculture.
Fertilizer companies commonly add melamine to their products because it helps control the rate at which nitrogen seeps into soil, thereby allowing the farmer to get more nutrient bang for the fertilizer buck. But the government doesn’t regulate how much melamine is applied to the soil. This melamine accumulates as salt crystals in the ground, tainting the soil through which American food sucks up American nutrients... But as all the caveats above indicate, these precautions will only go so far. Melamine, after all, points to the much larger relationship between industrial waste and American food production. Regulations might be lax when it comes to animal feed and fertilizer in China, but take a closer look at similar regulations in the United States and it becomes clear that they’re vague enough to allow industries to “recycle” much of their waste into fertilizer and other products that form the basis of our domestic food supply.More here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/17/opinion/17mcwilliams.html?scp=4&sq=melamine&st=cse
